Job Overview
We are seeking to recruit a Health & Safety Compliance Officer. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the Mill Hill Education Group (MHEG) in maintaining high standards of health, safety, and statutory compliance across its family of schools.
Working closely with the Group Health & Safety Advisor, Estates teams, and school leadership, the post holder will help monitor, review, and improve compliance across key risk areas including fire safety, asbestos management, and water safety (Legionella control), alongside broader health and safety responsibilities.
The role involves regular site visits, inspections, reporting, and follow-up actions to ensure that statutory duties are met, risks are effectively managed, and schools are supported in maintaining safe, compliant environments.
This is a hands-on, multi-site role suited to a proactive individual who is confident working independently and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders.

Fire Safety
- Support the annual review and ongoing monitoring of Fire Risk Assessments across all schools
- Undertake regular site inspections (typically monthly across the estate) to assess fire safety arrangements and identify areas for improvement
- Provide clear feedback and recommendations to the Group Health & Safety Advisor and school teams where improvements or remedial actions are required
- Monitor compliance with relevant fire safety legislation and guidance
- Assist schools in maintaining accurate fire safety documentation and procedures
- Attend and observe at least one fire drill per school annually, producing written reports with findings and recommendations
- Support the delivery of fire safety training and awareness activities where required
- Contribute to fire safety improvement projects in collaboration with Estates and the Health & Safety Advisor
- Maintain awareness of changes in fire safety legislation, guidance or standards and report these where relevant
Asbestos Management
- Carry our regular asbestos monitoring inspections in line with each school’s Asbestos Management Plan
- Inspection frequencies will typically be 3, 6 or 12 months depending on the level of asbestos risk and location
- Ensure asbestos registers and management plans remain accurate and up to date
- Report any damage or concerns immediately and ensure appropriate escalation
- Monitor compliance with safe systems of work relating to asbestos-containing materials
- Support the maintenance of central asbestos records across the Group
- Assist with asbestos awareness training and communication
Water Safety (Legionella Control)
The role will assist in monitoring water safety compliance across the Group through routine temperature monitoring and reporting, supporting Legionella prevention procedures.
Monitoring will include systems across all schools within the Group and include:
- Undertake routine water temperature monitoring in accordance with the Group procedures
- Accurately record and report monitoring results
- Identify and escalate any irregular readings or concerns
- Support compliance with Legionella control requirements (including ACOP L8 guidance)
- Assist with maintaining water safety records and documentation
- Work with Estates teams to ensure timely resolution of issues
General Health & Safety Support:
- Support the delivery of a structured health & safety inspection and audit programme
- Assist schools in maintaining suitable and sufficient risk assessments across a range of activities
- Support the safe management of contractors, including adherence to site rules, SCR and permit to work systems
- Assist in investigation of accidents, incidents, or near misses, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions
- Support statutory reporting requirements where applicable (e.g. RIDDOR)
- Monitor and track compliance actions, ensuring timely follow-up and resolution
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, visits and compliance checks
- Contribute to the development of consistent health and safety practices across the group
