About You
As a Graduate EC&I Engineer, you'll support work across the full electrical, controls, and instrumentation scope of a novel compact particle accelerator - spanning power distribution, control systems, instrumentation, RF, and interlocks, from concept design through to commissioning. You'll be mentored throughout, working closely with senior engineers, while being trusted to take real tasks and run with them.
This is a hands-on, entry-level role for someone who has built things, not just studied them - a dissertation rig, a robotics project, personal electronics or FPGA work, a placement in a lab or plant. You should be workshop/bench fluent: comfortable with a scope, multimeter, signal generators and other common tools.
You'll be seeking breadth over specialism, moving between power, controls, instrumentation, RF, and safety in the same week, and you'll be comfortable with startup pace and fast-shifting scope. You'll be mentored, not managed minute-to-minute: we expect you to try, get stuck, ask sharp questions, and try again. Passive isn't a fit here.

Key Objectives
Support PLC, FPGA, and embedded programming, I/O testing and control-loop verification across accelerator subsystems.
Carry out hands-on EC&I commissioning and troubleshooting — cabling, termination, signal verification and plant-network bring-up.
Develop SCADA/HMI screens, support RF ancillary systems and produce engineering documentation.
Move quickly and pragmatically across power, controls, instrumentation, RF, and safety, adapting as scope shifts.

Support PLC, FPGA, and embedded programming, I/O testing and control-loop verification across accelerator subsystems
Support control and instrumentation loop checking and signal verification
2️⃣ Commissioning & Troubleshooting
Support hands-on EC&I commissioning and troubleshooting, including cabling, termination and plant-network bring-up
Support OT/plant network configuration, bring-up and maintenance
Support RF systems, including cabling, interlocks and ancillary instrumentation
3️⃣ Systems & Documentation
Support development of SCADA/HMI screens and configuration of control room hardware
Support production of engineering documentation, including drawings, cable schedules and test records
Support procurement activities such as specification and design reviews and vendor interactions
4️⃣ Speed & Adaptability
Take ownership of well-defined tasks and run with them - checking in rather than going quiet
Move fluidly between power, controls, instrumentation, RF, and safety as scope shifts, with support as you build breadth
- BEng/MEng or equivalent in Electrical, Electronics, Control & Instrumentation, Mechatronics, Power, RF/Telecommunications, Robotics (with a strong electrical/controls component), or a related discipline
- 0–2 years post-graduation experience
- Solid EC&I fundamentals: AC/DC and three-phase systems, LV distribution concepts, reading electrical drawings and schematics, and circuit fundamentals
- Understanding of PLC architecture and programming, and signal fundamentals (4–20 mA, 0–10 V, digital I/O)
- Comfortable getting hands-on with wiring, pulling cables, terminating, bench testing, and commissioning - this is not a desk job
- Full-time availability within 1–2 months
- Willingness to work on-site full-time in London
Ideal Experience
- Exposure to accelerator, nuclear, high-energy physics, or other R&D lab environments (placement, dissertation, or internship)
- MCAD/ECAD experience
- SCADA/HMI familiarity on any platform
- Knowledge of Python, C/C++, JavaScript, or another programming language
- Knowledge of Verilog/VHDL and experience with FPGAs
- Experience commissioning, testing, or troubleshooting hardware
- Basic RF/microwave concepts - transmission lines, impedance, S-parameters
- Fundamentals of electrical enclosure design and build
