We are seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Valuer to join our Fine Art and Antiques auction team. This role suits an experienced auction professional who is confident carrying out valuations and cataloguing while continuing to develop specialist knowledge and client relationships.
You will undertake professional valuations for probate, insurance, and market purposes, support cataloguing and research across departments, and play an active role in consigning property for auction while delivering excellent client service.
Key Responsibilities
Valuation & Appraisal
- Carry out valuations for probate, insurance, and open market purposes across fine art, antiques, decorative arts, jewellery, silver, furniture, and collectables
- Prepare clear, accurate valuation reports in line with company and legal standards
- Produce high-quality catalogue entries, research attributions, and condition reports
- Support specialist departments with cataloguing and sale preparation
- Perform in-depth research on historical and market data to enhance the understanding and presentation of items.
Client Engagement
- Provide professional client service during valuation days, home visits, and on-site appointments
- Advise clients on estimates, reserves, and sale options
- Build relationships with private clients and professional contacts
Auction Support
- Collaborate with auctioneers and the sales team to maximise auction performance.
- Present items during previews and participate in public or private valuations.
Mentorship
- Lead, train, and mentor junior valuers and other team members, sharing expertise and best practices.
Market Insight
- Stay up-to-date with market trends, sales data, and emerging areas of interest in the antiques and collectibles industry.
Auction Operations
- Assist with pre-sale preparation, saleroom display, and auction-day operations
- Work collaboratively with front-of-house, logistics, photography, and specialist teams
- Contribute to business generation and cross-selling opportunities
Team Leadership & Development
- Mentor and support junior team members
- Contribute to training, and knowledge-sharing
- Assist in shaping departmental strategy and growth
Skills & Qualifications
- Previous experience within the auction industry
- Broad knowledge of fine art and antiques across multiple categories
- Experience producing probate and insurance valuations
- Strong research, writing, and organisational skills
- Confident client-facing communicatio
- Knowledge of antiques, fine art, and collectibles across multiple categories.
- Excellent research and cataloguing skills, with attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for client interaction and catalogue production.
- Proficiency in auction house software and research tools.
- Ability to manage and prioritise multiple projects effectively.
