The Solicitor will provide professional legal advice and representation to clients, manage a caseload, prepare legal documents, conduct legal research, negotiate on behalf of clients, and ensure that all matters are handled efficiently and in accordance with applicable law and the firm’s professional standards.
The Solicitor will also contribute to the successful operation and development of the law firm by maintaining strong client relationships, meeting deadlines, maintaining accurate case records, and supporting the firm’s business objectives.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
1. Client Management
- Meet and communicate with clients to understand their legal needs.
- Provide clear, accurate and practical legal advice.
- Keep clients informed about the progress of their matters.
- Explain legal procedures, risks, costs and available options.
- Maintain professional and confidential relationships with clients.
- Deal promptly and professionally with client enquiries.
2. Legal Work and Case Management
- Manage a caseload appropriate to the solicitor’s area of practice and level of experience.
- Conduct legal research and analyse relevant legislation, regulations and case law.
- Draft, review and negotiate legal documents and correspondence.
- Prepare cases for negotiations, hearings, trials or other legal proceedings where applicable.
- Liaise with courts, tribunals, barristers, experts, other solicitors and relevant third parties.
- Monitor deadlines and ensure that all necessary actions are completed on time.
- Maintain complete and accurate case files.
3. Legal Compliance and Professional Standards
- Comply with the firm’s policies and procedures.
- Work in accordance with the professional requirements applicable to solicitors.
- Maintain client confidentiality and protect sensitive information.
- Follow appropriate conflict-of-interest, anti-money-laundering and client-identification procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of work undertaken and advice provided.
- Identify and report legal, regulatory and professional risks to the appropriate person within the firm.
4. Financial and Administrative Responsibilities
- Record time accurately where the firm’s billing system requires time recording.
- Assist with preparing bills and monitoring matters against agreed costs.
- Work efficiently and manage matters within agreed budgets.
- Ensure client funds and financial transactions are handled in accordance with the firm’s procedures and applicable professional requirements.
- Maintain organised electronic and physical case files.
5. Business Development
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with existing and prospective clients.
- Identify opportunities to develop the firm’s legal services.
- Participate in networking, seminars, conferences and professional events where appropriate.
- Contribute to the firm’s reputation and professional profile.
- Assist with preparing articles, legal updates, presentations or other marketing material where required.
6. Teamwork and Supervision
- Work effectively with partners, other solicitors, paralegals, legal assistants and administrative staff.
- Support junior members of the team and provide guidance where appropriate.
- Delegate work appropriately where authorised.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to improving the firm’s systems and procedures.
Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- Qualified solicitor in England and Wales, or working towards qualification where the position permits.
- Relevant legal qualification and appropriate professional training.
- Current practising certificate where required for the role.
