About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Boilersmith to join our team working on heritage steam locomotive boilers. This role involves the maintenance, repair, and construction of boilers using traditional techniques and materials, helping to preserve historic steam locomotives within the UK heritage railway sector.
This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced craftsperson with a passion for heritage engineering, precision workmanship, and working to high safety and quality standards.
The successful applicant would be time-served with appropriate qualifications and skills to maintain, repair and build steam locomotive boilers.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain, repair, and rebuild heritage steam locomotive boilers.
- Manufacture and fit boiler components using traditional methods.
- Riveting, flanging, forming, and plate work.
- Carry out inspections, fault diagnosis, and remedial work.
- Work from historical drawings, specifications, and verbal instructions.
- Ensure all work complies with relevant safety regulations and heritage standards.
- Collaborate with engineers, inspectors, and other skilled trades.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment.
Essential skills include:
· Use of hands tools.
· Marking out.
· Use of power and air tools.
· Thermal cutting (oxy-propane, plasma cutter).
· Use of machine tools.
· Working from engineering drawings.
· Strong attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a small specialist team.
Desirable skills include:
· MMA/MIG/MAG/TIG welding experience, including experience in welding to pressure vessel standards.
· Plate forming experience.
· Experience with copper fire boxes/platework.
Your role will require you to perform a wide range of duties including but not limited to: boiler washouts and periodic inspections, component repair/replacement, plate work renewal, tubing, hot riveting.
Further training will be provided where necessary or desired.
Monday to Thursday: 07:30 – 16:30
Friday: 07:30 – 12:00
