Job Overview
Principal Housing is a provider of supported accommodation for young people. This position is for our 18+ semi - independent provision. The service aims to bridge the gap between leaving care and moving onto independent living. Our goal is to provide each young person with a bespoke service package tailored to meet their individual needs and to provide them with the necessary support/tools for both personal & economic growth.
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Bank Floating Support Key Worker (self employed contractor) to join our team. The ideal candidate should have a strong desire to make a difference in each young persons life and will play a vital role in providing high-quality floating support within our three private residential settings. This position requires a commitment to supporting each young person on their journey into independent living to enable them to be well prepared for the next stage of their lives.
Duties
- Previous experience working with looked after young people and / or asylum seekers within a similar environment is advantageous.
- To adhere to the organisational culture of treating all young people with dignity, respect, and anti-discriminatory practice whilst taking a patient, empathetic and non judgmental approach.
- To be fully involved and acquainted with the implementation of the support required for each young person during your floating shift and to be aware of up-to-date information including any changing needs, key work sessions required, appointments and meetings etc.
- Be alert to any specific changes, mental / physical deterioration, behaviours, or disposition which may be an indication the young person may be unwell or require extra support hours.
- Work with management to ensure the risk assessments are up to date and reflective of any changes for the young person. Ensure to adhere to risk management strategies in place.
- To work with the manager to ensure you are clear on how you will be supporting the young person whilst floating and implement effectively.
- To accompany the young person to appointments when required and take an innovative approach to engaging them in positive activities away from the property
- To demonstrate a good understanding of how to carry out effective key working which is well thought through with clear outcomes which correlate with the young person’s needs.
- Encourage young people to make informed choices about decisions that affect them and support them to take control of gaining/ maintaining independence.
- Guide and encourage each young person in gaining the skills for successful independent living. (essential life skills e.g. cooking, cleaning, DIY, laundry, budgeting, grocery shopping, self-care, healthy daily routines etc).
- To work with the young person in encouraging, offering support and guidance in relation to their engagement in educational, employment and training services.
- To have positive interactions with each young person during your floating support, offer positive feedback, give positive reassurance, and listen.
- To have a good understanding of how to work effectively with 18+ young people & understand the range of possible approaches appropriate to working with the client group.
- To promote positive behaviours, be able to distract a young person from negative / challenging behaviours, to be able to positively deescalate a situation and deal with any incident within their floating support.
- To create an agenda, plan, and chair house meetings as required
- During floating support, all staff are required to ensure the communal environment is safe and pleasant. Young people should be encouraged to keep the property clean (prompting as required), however, staff are also required to contribute to domestic cleaning in the communal areas of the property which is inclusive of basic works such as hoovering, wiping surfaces, washing / drying dishes and using initiative in cleaning any other areas deemed necessary.
Skills
- A minimum of 2 years’ front-line experience of working directly with young people or vulnerable groups within a housing related setting
- An understanding of pathway plans and risk assessment.
- An understanding of the often complex issues likely to be presented by the young people who use our services e.g. mental health, use of illicit substances, CCE, CSE, self harming behaviours etc.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and professional attitude with the ability to establish good relationships with young people, colleagues, and statutory agencies.
- A strong proven commitment to working with young people and an understanding of the factors affecting their lives.
- Understanding of safeguarding principles
- A minimum of NVQ level 2 in health and social care or an equivalent qualification is preferred for this role, but not essential. (Induction training and ongoing CPD training is provided)
- Ability to maintain professionalism, fulfil duties diplomatically and be a professional role model of the service.
- An understanding of, The supported accommodation Act, 2023, The care act, 2014, Working together to safeguard children (2018) & other legislation related to the client group.
- Ability to use Microsoft word, google drive (training provided) & possess a good level of numeracy, literacy, and comprehension to prepare/maintain records.
- Ability to be self-motivating, work under pressure and manage time effectively, prioritising different areas of work according to need.
- Having a qualification, experience, or talent for: Sports, fitness, performing arts, catering, art, good nutritional knowledge, counselling, housing management or similar (Preferred but not essential)
- Applicants with a lived experience of the care system are welcomed
Contract type: Self employed contractor (bank worker)
Shift options: Bank shifts at short notice - Shift patterns will be:
- 2pm - 8pm (£14ph) (weekdays Mon - Fri)
- Weekends: Saturday 2pm - 8pm (£14ph) + sleep in (£70) / Sunday 9am -3pm (£14ph)
- NB:
- Bank staff will be required for staff holidays, staff sickness, emergencies
- Shifts may become available at short notice
All candidates must have an enhanced DBS which is currently on the update service.
