The Role
Music Academy Midlands is looking for an enthusiastic, reliable woodwind teacher to deliver instrumental lessons at one of our partner schools.
You will teach school-age students through a mixture of one-to-one and small-group lessons, primarily covering flute, clarinet and saxophone. The ability to teach recorder would also be useful.
Most students will be beginners or developing players. We are looking for someone who can make lessons engaging, structured and enjoyable while helping each student build strong musical foundations, confidence and a genuine enthusiasm for playing.
Teaching will take place during the school day on a regular, agreed day each week.
Opportunity to build a larger teaching day
The role will initially involve an established timetable at one school.
For the right teacher, there is also the potential to introduce woodwind tuition at two nearby schools. Our aim would be to combine these timetables, where possible, to create a fuller and more financially worthwhile teaching day.
Additional hours are not guaranteed at the point of appointment and will depend on school approval and student demand. However, we are actively looking for someone interested in developing the role as new students join.
Music Academy Midlands manages student enrolment, billing and the majority of parent administration, allowing you to focus on delivering excellent lessons.
Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging one-to-one and small-group woodwind lessons in school
- Teach flute, clarinet and saxophone across beginner and developing levels
- Plan lessons around each student’s ability, interests and musical goals
- Develop students’ instrumental technique, musicianship and confidence
- Prepare students for performances, graded examinations or auditions where appropriate
- Record attendance and brief progress notes using our online system
- Communicate professionally with our team, the school and parents
- Manage the agreed teaching timetable reliably
- Arrive prepared, organised and on time
- Follow our safeguarding, behaviour and professional-conduct procedures
- Create a positive environment in which students enjoy learning and feel encouraged to progress
What we’re looking for (Essential)
- A high standard of musicianship on one or more woodwind instruments
- The ability to teach flute, clarinet, recorder and/or saxophone confidently
- Experience working with children or young people
- Clear, encouraging and age-appropriate communication
- Excellent reliability, organisation and professional conduct
- The ability to travel independently to the school
- The right to work in the UK
- A willingness to complete the required safeguarding and compliance checks
Desirable
- Experience delivering instrumental lessons in schools
- The ability to teach all three core instruments: flute, clarinet and saxophone
- The ability to teach recorder
- Experience teaching both individuals and small groups
- A music degree, teaching qualification, Grade 8 certificate or equivalent professional experience
- Experience preparing students for performances or graded examinations
Appointment will be subject to an appropriate Enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references, ID and right to work in the UK checks and completion of the required safeguarding training. We will explain and support you through this process.
