Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEND/SEMH (Special Educational Needs and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join our vibrant educational community. In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting children with diverse needs, including those with autism and other disabilities, helping them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. You will work closely with teachers, therapists, and families to create a nurturing environment where every child feels valued and empowered to reach their full potential. Responsibilities
- Support children with SEND (Special Educational Needs) and SEMH by implementing tailored learning activities that promote engagement and progress.
- Assist in managing behavior and emotional regulation strategies to foster a positive classroom atmosphere.
- Work one-on-one or in small groups with children who have autism or other disabilities, providing personalized support to meet their unique needs.
- Collaborate with teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and parents to develop and follow individualized education plans (IEPs).
- Support children during classroom activities, outdoor play, lunch breaks, and transitions to ensure safety and inclusion.
- Use effective communication skills to build trusting relationships with children, encouraging their confidence and independence.
- Contribute to creating an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and promotes understanding among all students.
Skills
- Experience working with children in educational or care settings, particularly those with special needs such as autism or SEMH.
- Knowledge of special education practices and strategies for supporting children with disabilities.
- Prior experience working with individuals with autism or SEMH challenges is highly desirable.
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with children, colleagues, parents, and external professionals.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and positive in challenging situations while maintaining a proactive approach.
- Experience caring for toddlers or young children enhances your ability to support early developmental needs.
- A genuine passion for helping children overcome barriers to learning and social integration.
