We are seeking a compassionate and motivated Healthcare Support Worker (Band 3) to join the team within the West Wing Clinical Research Centre (WWCRC), a specialist unit supporting patients participating in clinical trials. West Wing Clinical Research centre is a designated NIHR Clinical Research Facility since 2022. As a key member of the team, you will provide high quality, patient centred care under the supervision of a registered nurse. You will support patients undergoing cancer treatment on a clinical trial, helping to maintain a safe, clean and welcoming clinical environment.
Your duties will include monitoring and recording vital signs, measuring height and weight, and reporting any concerns promptly to registered staff. Following training and competency assessment, you will undertake delegated clinical tasks such as venepuncture, ECGs, urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring and removal of peripheral cannulae.
The role also includes non-clinical duties such as ensuring patient research folders are ready for the day, escorting patients between departments, assisting with admissions and discharges, transferring specimens and medications, maintaining stock levels and cleaning equipment in line with infection prevention and control standards.

To practice the Care Certificate and support junior staff to achieve the standards. Communicate with tact, empathy, overcome barriers to understanding e.g., patients with physical impairment, mental health conditions or learning disabilities.
Monitoring and recording patients’ vital signs (including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation) and reporting any abnormal results to registered nursing staff. Assess comfort of patient and instigate emergency procedures.
Measuring and recording patients’ height and weight.
Performing venepuncture and venous blood sampling, after training and assessment of competency.
Undertakes a limited range of delegated clinical care duties relevant to the specific clinical area following competency sign off, for example, ECG, urinalysis, catheter removal, MRSA screening swabs, blood glucose monitoring, pregnancy testing, removal of peripheral cannula, observing patients for signs of agitation or distress, providing heightened observation through specialing/ enhanced care, recording of allergies on EPR and other clinical tasks where training/competency sign off deemed appropriate for a Band 3 HCSW that has been ratified through NAHPC.
