What do you want from work?
Health & Safety is sometimes described as “the book written in blood.” It's a stark phrase, but it reflects an important truth: many of the standards and safeguards we have today exist because something went wrong in the past.
Your job will be to help make sure those lessons aren't learned twice.
You'll help businesses identify risks, improve their working practices and create safer, more efficient workplaces. The work you do could prevent someone else from becoming the next lesson.
That is what makes Health & Safety such an important profession.
This apprenticeship is an opportunity to start building a career where what you learn has a genuine purpose. You'll develop your knowledge, gain practical experience and learn from experienced Health & Safety professionals while working towards a recognised qualification.
You won't be expected to arrive knowing everything.
We'll teach you. We'll develop you. And we'll give you the opportunity to become a Health & Safety professional.
The Role
We are looking for someone who wants to build a career in Health & Safety and is ready to learn.
You will work towards a Level 3 Safety, Health and Environment Technician Apprenticeship, gaining a recognised qualification alongside practical experience within our Health & Safety Consultancy and Training team.
The role is varied and will combine office-based work with visits to customer sites across the South West.
You could be involved in:
- Supporting Health & Safety consultancy projects
- Assisting with site inspections and workplace assessments
- Producing Health & Safety documentation
- Helping to develop policies, procedures and risk assessments
- Completing administrative and compliance tasks
- Researching Health & Safety requirements
- Supporting experienced consultants with customer projects
- Attending customer sites and gaining practical experience
- Helping to identify workplace hazards and appropriate control measures
- Developing your understanding of construction and workplace Health & Safety
- Communicating with customers and colleagues
- Learning how businesses can improve their Health & Safety standards
As your knowledge and confidence develop, so will your responsibilities.
You'll gradually be given more independence and responsibility, allowing you to develop your own professional judgement and become increasingly confident in dealing with real workplace Health & Safety issues.
Where Could This Take You?
This apprenticeship is designed as the starting point of a career, not simply a qualification.
You'll initially work towards the Level 3 Safety, Health and Environment Technician standard, building the knowledge and practical experience needed to progress within the profession.
With further development and experience, there is the opportunity to progress towards higher-level qualifications, including an NVQ Level 6 Occupational Health and Safety Diploma, with the longer-term potential to work towards professional membership and CMIOSH status.
The person joining us could therefore be starting at the beginning of a career that develops into a highly skilled and respected Health & Safety profession.
Who Are We Looking For?
This could suit someone who has just finished A Levels or college and is looking for an alternative to university.
It could also suit someone who has already been working and has developed an interest in Health & Safety through their current or previous role.
Perhaps you've worked in construction, engineering, facilities, manufacturing, administration or another industry and found yourself interested in how workplaces operate safely.
Or perhaps you're simply someone who likes understanding why things are done the way they are, spotting problems and finding ways to improve them.
You don't need previous Health & Safety experience.
We are looking for someone who is:
- Interested in building a career in Health & Safety
- Curious and willing to learn
- Confident communicating with people
- Comfortable working with computers and Microsoft Office
- Able to produce clear, professional written work
- Organised and able to manage competing priorities
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
- Prepared to ask questions and learn from experienced professionals
- Able to work to a high standard and take pride in their work
- Professional and confident when dealing with customers
- Willing to travel to customer sites across the South West
A driving licence would be advantageous, or you should be committed to obtaining one as your role develops.
More Than an Apprenticeship
You'll be learning while you're working, which means the things you learn aren't just theoretical.
You'll see how Health & Safety works on real sites, with real businesses and real challenges.
You'll learn from experienced Health & Safety professionals and gradually build the knowledge, confidence and professional judgement required to operate within the industry.
You'll also get an insight into more than one side of the business, with Greenlight Safety and Training delivering training, consultancy and workplace Health & Safety services.
That variety will help you understand the profession from different perspectives and give you a strong foundation for your career.
