Team Leader (Therapeutic) – Freelance
Location: Birmingham (Office-based)
Rate: £30 per hour
Hours: 2 days per week (approximately 15 hours)

We work alongside individuals and communities to help people navigate mental health challenges, build resilience and create positive pathways forward. Our work supports a wide range of people, including those recovering from substance use, care-experienced children and adults, individuals affected by trauma, and people accessing support through education, community and justice settings, including schools and prisons.
We're looking for an experienced and compassionate Team Leader to lead and support our team of therapists, outreach practitioners and workshop facilitators. If you're passionate about empowering others, enjoy supporting teams and thrive in an impactful environment, we'd love to hear from you.
Reporting to the Director, you'll supervise a team of up to eight practitioners, helping them deliver safe, effective and person-centred support while ensuring services run smoothly.
This role is ideal for someone with previous experience in mental health, therapeutic services, social care, community services or the voluntary sector who enjoys leading people, solving day-to-day challenges and making a genuine difference.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Manage, support and motivate a team of up to eight members of staff
- Provide regular supervision, wellbeing check-ins, probation reviews and annual appraisals.
- Adapt innovative ideas to build the team culture and morale
- Support staff development through coaching, mentoring and constructive feedback.
- Encourage a positive, collaborative and trauma-informed team culture.
- Help manage workloads and ensure staff feel supported in their roles.
- Prioritise the well being of the team, so they can better support our clients
Service Delivery
- Oversee the smooth day-to-day delivery of therapeutic, outreach and wellbeing services.
- Support practitioners delivering one-to-one and group interventions.
- Help resolve operational issues and adapt quickly to changing priorities.
- Promote safe, professional and person-centred practice.
- Escalate safeguarding concerns or significant issues to the Director when required.
Partnership Working
- Attend meetings with referral partners and community organisations.
- Build positive relationships with external agencies and stakeholders.
- Represent Journal to Dreams professionally within the local community.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure client records are completed accurately and on time.
- Monitor service outcomes and support quality assurance processes.
- Promote good safeguarding practice, confidentiality and GDPR compliance.
- Ensure organisational policies and procedures are followed consistently.
About You
You'll have:
- Experience supervising or leading a team within mental health, social care, wellbeing, community or voluntary services.
- Experience supporting vulnerable adults, including people affected by trauma, adverse childhood experiences, mental health challenges or substance recovery.
- Excellent communication and people management skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- A calm, positive and solution-focused approach.
- A good understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries.
- Confidence using Microsoft Office and electronic record systems.
- A genuine passion for supporting people and helping teams succeed.
- Ability to adapt to change and think on the spot in a fast paced environment
Essential
- Qualification in social work or a related field.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice.
- Mental Health First Aid and/or Safeguarding training.

Freelance Requirements
This is a self-employed freelance position.
Successful applicants must:
- Be able to work on a self-employed basis.
- Be responsible for their own tax and National Insurance contributions.
- Hold (or be willing to obtain) an Enhanced DBS check.
- Have the right to work in the UK.
- Be available to work from our Birmingham office two days each week.
