We are looking for an enthusiastic and customer-focused Assistant Trade Sales Counter Manager to join our busy timber merchant in Abingdon. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual with a background in timber, building materials, or trade sales who enjoys building customer relationships and driving sales.
You will play a key role in the day-to-day operation of our trade counter, delivering outstanding customer service, identifying sales opportunities, and supporting the continued success and growth of the branch.
This position offers excellent career progression, with the opportunity to develop into the role of Trade Sales Counter Manager and, in time, General Manager.
Previous experience within the timber or builders' merchant sector would be an advantage; however, full training will be provided for the right candidate with the right attitude and willingness to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the day-to-day operation of the trade sales counter.
- Provide expert advice on timber products, sheet materials, fencing, decking, landscaping products, and general building materials.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with trade customers, contractors, builders, and local businesses.
- Identify opportunities to increase sales and develop existing customer accounts.
- Prepare quotations, process customer orders, and ensure accurate pricing.
- Work closely with the yard, warehouse, and delivery teams to ensure efficient order fulfilment.
- Monitor stock levels and assist with stock control and merchandising.
- Ensure health and safety procedures are followed and maintain high housekeeping standards.
- Support the Branch Manager in achieving sales, service, and profitability targets.
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous experience within a timber merchant, builders' merchant, or building materials supplier (preferred but not essential).
- A good knowledge of timber products and construction materials, or a genuine willingness to learn.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and sales/order processing systems.
- A positive, hands-on attitude and a strong work ethic.
- A commitment to delivering outstanding customer service.
