Overview of Added Scientific
Added Scientific is a successful, independent, additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing company, historically operating as a contract research organisation. We provide consultancy, problem-solving, and lab-based technical services to high profile clients across a range of industries.
We are now entering an exciting new phase, transitioning into a product-focused company. Our current focus is on the development of advanced 3D and 2D inkjet printing platforms, including custom printhead drive electronics and full printing systems. These systems are designed specifically for the research and development market, enabling scientists and engineers to explore and develop new materials and devices for inkjet and binder jetting applications.
Our Core Values
We work with high-profile clients who expect exceptional standards, and our values reflect that. We are committed to excellence, take ownership of our work, and approach every project with professionalism, innovation and attention to detail. As a small team, we value agility and a proactive, problem-solving mindset.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Technical Principal, the Mechatronics Engineer will play a central role in the development of our next-generation inkjet printing systems. This is a multidisciplinary role requiring a strong foundation in mechanical design, electronics, and software development. You will work on the architecture and integration of complex mechatronic systems, collaborating closely with mechanical, electronics, and software engineers to deliver robust, flexible platforms for research use.
This is a hands-on, lab-based role that offers the opportunity to contribute to the full product development lifecycle—from concept through to prototype and pre-commercialisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead research, development and prototyping of innovative engineering solutions.
- Collaborate closely with internal team members and external stakeholders.
- Identify problems early and implement effective, practical solutions.
- Design and integrate mechanical, electrical, and software components for inkjet printing systems.
- Develop and test motion control systems, sensors, actuators, and embedded control logic.
- Collaborate with software engineers to implement control algorithms and user interfaces.
- Support the development of modular printer architectures and experimental modules.
- Conduct system-level testing, debugging, and validation.
- Maintain technical documentation including schematics, CAD models, and test reports.
- Assist in transitioning prototypes to production-ready systems.
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will be a proactive and collaborative engineer with a passion for building complex systems. You should be comfortable working across disciplines and managing your time effectively across multiple projects. You will have the autonomy to lead your own research and mechatronic system design, from initial concept through to testing and implementation.
Essential Skills and Experience

- Experience with motion control, sensors, and actuators.
- Programming experience in C/C++, Python, or similar.
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality and precision.
- Ability to take ownership of projects and work independently.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a professional and client-focused approach.
- Technical report writing with strong written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with inkjet printing systems or other precision hardware
- Familiarity with GUI development and control software
- Knowledge of additive manufacturing technologies.
- Experience working in fast-paced or small team environments
