Bank Waking Nights Support worker - Residential children’s home
Location: Church View Children’s Place, Hoyland – Barnsley
Hourly rate-£12.75 per hour unqualified £13.50 per hour for staff who hold a level 3 in residential childcare or a level 4 apprenticeship in residential child care

Job Overview
Bank Night Waking Support Workers are required to carry out all the core responsibilities expected of permanent night staff to ensure consistency and safety within the home. The role involves monitoring and supporting children overnight, maintaining a calm and safe environment, completing welfare checks, record keeping, household tasks, and responding appropriately to emergencies.
It is a requirement that all Bank Workers undertake and complete the Level 3 or 4 qualification in Residential Childcare during their employment at Church View Children’s place. Funding for this qualification will be provided by the organisation subject to regular shifts being undertaken and successful completion of the probationary period.
Key Responsibilities
· Remain awake and vigilant throughout the entire shift.
· Complete regular welfare and safety checks as per individual care plans and complete nightly check sheets.
· Support children who wake during the night with reassurance, comfort, toileting, or sensory needs.
· Carry out barrier nursing/care in line with infection control guidance when supporting unwell children.
· Respond calmly and professionally to emergencies, including hospital admissions.
· Report all concerns, incidents, or safeguarding issues immediately to the on-call manager.
· Ensure safeguarding procedures are always followed.
· Support children with evening routines including bathing, oral hygiene, personal care, bedtime routines, and calming activities.
· Encourage independence while providing appropriate support to meet individual needs.
· Support permanent staff with medication audits, stock checks, and maintaining accurate records where appropriate.
· Washing, drying, folding, and ironing clothing.
· Minor clothing repairs were appropriate.
· Cleaning communal areas, bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms.
· Preparing meals, batch cooking, and making packed lunches.
· Rotating and labelling dry goods, fridge, and freezer items as per food safety guidance.
· Maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming home environment.

Essential Requirements
- Ability to work the required rota, including weekends and bank holidays.
- Previous experience working in residential care on waking night shifts
- A strong values base and genuine interest in supporting children with Autism and learning disabilities.
- Resilient, calm, caring, and fun personality with the ability to support children who may display challenging behaviour (full training provided).
- Good IT skills.
- Ability to produce accurate and clear written records, including daily logs, incident reports, and accident forms.
- Ability to use visual communication aids to support children’s understanding and engagement.
- Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding procedures, child protection responsibilities, and professional boundaries.
- Awareness of sensory needs and the ability to support children using appropriate sensory strategies and environments.
- Basic cooking skills and the ability to prepare snacks and simple meals in line with dietary and health requirements.
- Willingness and ability to complete the required Diploma/Apprenticeship in Residential Childcare within the timeframe set by the assessor.
- A genuine passion for improving outcomes for vulnerable children.
· The ability to understand the maturity required to care for vulnerable children
Desirable Qualities
- Previous experience working in residential childcare, particularly with children with Autism and behaviours that challenge.
- Access to a car and ability to drive for work purposes.
- Level 3 or 4 qualification in Residential Childcare (or equivalent).
- Experience creating visual communication resources for children with additional communication needs.
- Previous safeguarding or child-protection training.
