The Medical Haematology Nurse Practitioner role is to provide holistic care to adults with haematology conditions, such as red cell disorders, sickle cell disease and transfusion. In addition to your speciality-specific caseload, you will share responsibility for the wider general medical haematology workload, including immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), acquired bleeding disorders, iron deficiency, polycythaemia, thrombocytosis and other benign haematology referrals. Close support will be given to develop clinical expertise, with supervision and guidance by the medical haematology consultant team.
The post involves undertaking face to face clinic review, telephone assessment, inpatient review and domiciliary visits with both routine scheduled work and ad hoc assessment according to clinical need, The individual must therefore be able to work autonomously, prioritise workload in response to service need and have good time management and organisational skills. The post holder will provide the first point of contact for all red cell disorder patients and their families, working in collaboration with the dedicated haematology emergency assessment unit (EAU).

The post holder will provide specialist nursing care for adults with sickle cell disease (SCD), thalassaemia, rare inherited anaemias, iron overload and patients requiring long-term transfusion support. They will act as the first point of contact for red cell disorder patients and their families and will work closely with the Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre (HCC) in Birmingham and the dedicated haematology Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU).
- Review of patients (inpatient and outpatient) through face-to-face and telephone clinics with red cell and transfusion-dependent conditions.
- Undertake independent health assessment, arrange investigations and review results, arrange onward referral – with timely electronic documentation and provision of clear management plans.
- Instigate, alter and monitor treatment including iron chelation, red cell transfusion, hydroxycarbamide, erythropoietin, crizanlizumab where applicable, and venesection.
- Assess, consent, arrange, authorise blood transfusion and manage any complications of transfusion.
- Support acute management of sickle cell crises in partnership with the EAU and the in-patient haematology team, including pain management pathways and exchange transfusion coordination.
- Provide specialist input to pregnancy planning and antenatal/postnatal care for women with haemoglobinopathies, in collaboration with obstetrics.
- Engage with the Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre (HCC) in Birmingham, regional haemoglobinopathy MDTs and the National Haemoglobinopathy Registry (NHR).
- Support the transition of young people from paediatric to adult red cell services.
- Provide expert advice, education and support to patients, families and other health professionals regarding the red cell cohort.
