Job Purpose
To provide safe, effective, and patient-centred pharmaceutical care while supporting the efficient day-to-day operation of the pharmacy. The role includes responsibility for stock ordering and inventory management, ensuring timely procurement of medicines, proactively chasing outstanding orders, and leading the promotion and delivery of the NHS Pharmacy First service to maximise patient access and service growth.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Responsibilities
- Deliver safe and accurate dispensing in accordance with GPhC standards and legal requirements.
- Provide professional advice on medicines, minor ailments, and healthy lifestyle interventions.
- Conduct clinical checks and supervise the dispensing process.
- Deliver NHS and private pharmacy services, including Pharmacy First, vaccinations, blood pressure checks, contraception services, and other commissioned services where appropriate.
- Maintain accurate patient records and ensure compliance with confidentiality and data protection requirements.
Stock Management
- Take overall responsibility for ordering medicines and pharmacy stock to ensure optimal availability.
- Monitor stock levels and usage trends to minimise shortages and reduce waste.
- Chase wholesalers and manufacturers regarding outstanding, delayed, or unavailable items.
- Source alternative suppliers or suitable products during shortages while maintaining patient safety.
- Manage stock rotation, expiry date checks, and controlled drug stock in accordance with legal requirements.
- Investigate stock discrepancies and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels to meet patient demand while controlling costs.
Pharmacy First Leadership
- Champion the Pharmacy First service across the pharmacy team.
- Identify and engage eligible patients for Pharmacy First consultations.
- Work closely with GPs, NHS 111, local healthcare providers, and the wider multidisciplinary team to maximise referrals.
- Train, support, and motivate pharmacy staff to confidently identify suitable Pharmacy First opportunities.
- Monitor service activity and performance against agreed targets.
- Promote Pharmacy First through patient education and community engagement.
- Ensure consultations are completed accurately and documented in line with NHS requirements.
Operational Responsibilities
- Support the smooth daily running of the pharmacy.
- Ensure excellent customer service and patient satisfaction.
- Assist in workforce planning and workflow management.
- Maintain compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), GPhC standards, and NHS contractual requirements.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and audit activities.
- Contribute to achieving pharmacy business objectives and service growth.
Person SpecificationEssential
- Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
- Strong clinical knowledge and decision-making skills.
- Experience working in a community pharmacy environment.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Good understanding of NHS pharmacy services, including Pharmacy First.
- Ability to manage stock efficiently and resolve supply issues proactively.
- Confident using pharmacy PMR systems and wholesaler ordering platforms.
Desirable
- Previous experience leading NHS service delivery.
- Experience managing pharmacy stock budgets and procurement.
- Independent Prescriber qualification (desirable but not essential).
- Leadership or management experience.
