Logistics Technician
£27,500–£31,000 per year
Full-time, Permanent
Based from Somercotes, Alfreton, DE55 4QQ
We are looking for an organised, practical and dependable person to join our Logistics team at DisasterCare East Midlands.
When a home has been affected by fire, flooding or another insured event, the customer's belongings often need to be carefully removed while restoration work takes place.
Those belongings can range from everyday household items and furniture to possessions that are valuable, sentimental or impossible to replace.
Our Logistics Technicians are responsible for safely packing, recording, transporting, storing and eventually returning those items.
This is more than a driving, warehouse or removals job.
Accuracy matters just as much as physical ability. From the moment an item leaves a customer's property, we need to know what it is, what condition it is in, where it has gone and where it is being stored.
You will also work directly with customers who may be dealing with significant disruption to their home, so care, professionalism and good communication are an important part of the role.
The role
- Attend properties affected by fire, flooding and other insured damage.
- Carefully pack and protect customers' belongings before removal.
- Photograph, label and digitally record items accurately.
- Produce and maintain clear contents inventories.
- Load and secure furniture, household contents and other belongings safely for transport.
- Transport customer contents between properties, storage facilities and our restoration operation.
- Maintain an accurate chain of custody from collection through storage, restoration and final return.
- Organise customer belongings correctly within storage.
- Keep clean, contaminated and Beyond Economical Restoration items appropriately separated.
- Retrieve items when required for inspection, cleaning or restoration.
- Support Contents, Fire & Flood Restoration and Strip-Out teams where operationally required.
- Assist with wider restoration activities when the needs of the business require it and where appropriate to your training and competence.
- Return restored belongings safely to customers' properties.
- Complete customer walkthroughs and handovers when items are returned.
- Keep digital inventories and job records accurate and up to date.
- Obtain the required records and confirmations when customer contents are handed back.
- Carry out vehicle and equipment checks and report defects promptly.
- Use trolleys, straps, ramps and other handling equipment safely.
- Follow RAMS, COSHH, PPE, manual-handling and lone-working procedures.
- Take part in on-call, surge and major-loss support when required.
The supplied Logistics JD specifically covers packing, digital inventories, chain of custody, transportation, storage, segregation, restoration support and final customer return.
Working hours and flexibility
The core contracted hours are 40 hours per week, normally based around 08:00 to 16:30.
Logistics within property restoration does not always fit neatly into those hours. Travel, collections, customer appointments, property conditions, returns and the needs of live restoration jobs can mean earlier starts, later finishes or additional hours when required.
We are looking for people who understand that 16:30 is not an automatic finish time if a collection or return still needs to be completed, customer contents need to be secured, a property needs to be properly handed over or essential work needs to be finished.
Your primary role will be Logistics, but you will be part of the wider restoration operation. When the needs of the business require it, you will also be expected to support Fire & Flood Restoration, Contents and Strip-Out activities where appropriate to your training and competence.
The role can also involve on-call requirements and additional support during surge or major-loss events.
We value people's time and do not expect additional hours unnecessarily. We do, however, need technicians who are flexible, take ownership of their work and understand the operational nature of the role.
If you are looking for a position where you will only ever work 08:00 to 16:30, this is unlikely to be the right role for you.
Additional hours will be managed in line with your employment terms and working-time requirements. Where appropriate, a separate voluntary 48-hour Working Time opt-out agreement may also be discussed.
What good looks like
If we collect an item, we can locate it when it is needed.
The digital inventory accurately matches what is physically in our care.
Customer belongings are packed and handled properly and do not suffer avoidable secondary damage.
Vehicles are loaded safely and items are properly secured for transport.
Storage areas remain organised, and contents are placed in the correct location.
Clean, contaminated and Beyond Economical Restoration items are managed appropriately.
Chain of custody is maintained from collection through to final return.
Digital records are completed accurately at the time rather than reconstructed later.
Collections and returns are organised, controlled and professionally completed.
If something does not look right, you raise it rather than making assumptions.
Customers understand what is happening to their belongings and feel confident that their possessions are being looked after.
You support the wider restoration team when required rather than seeing your role as simply moving items from one place to another.
Most importantly, you treat somebody else's possessions with the same care you would expect someone to show your own.
Experience and qualifications
We are particularly interested in candidates with previous experience in one or more of the following:
- Removals
- Logistics
- Warehousing
- Furniture or household-goods handling
- Delivery work
- Inventory control
- Storage operations
- Contents restoration
- Property restoration
- Customer-facing field work
Experience safely packing, loading, securing, transporting and storing furniture or household contents would be a strong advantage.
Experience maintaining inventories or chain-of-custody records would also be useful.
Previous experience using digital inventory, warehouse-management or job-management systems would be beneficial.
Useful qualifications or training include:
- Forklift or other Material Handling Equipment (MHE) licences
- BAR or removals-industry training
- Manual Handling training
- Relevant logistics, warehousing or transport qualifications
A full UK driving licence is essential.
A DBS check may be required depending on client and property-access requirements.
Forklift or MHE qualifications are desirable rather than essential, and training can be provided where appropriate.
Direct insurance-restoration experience is not essential, but applicants with strong removals, logistics, warehousing or contents-handling experience are particularly encouraged to apply.
The supplied JD makes the full UK driving licence essential while treating logistics/removals/warehousing experience, digital systems experience and Forklift/MHE qualifications as desirable.
Salary and progression
Starting salary is £27,500, with a clear progression pathway as your experience and responsibility develop.
Current progression is:
- Logistics Technician: £27,500
- Lead Technician: £28,500
- BAR Training completed: £30,000
- Senior Lead Technician, 3+ years: £31,000
We want people who can develop from safely completing collections and returns into taking greater ownership of jobs, inventories, customer handovers and the wider logistics operation.
The £27,500–£31,000 progression pathway is set out in the supplied Logistics Technician JD.
Benefits you'll receive
- 28 days' annual leave, including Bank Holidays
- Employee Assistance Programme with 24/7 confidential support
- Workplace pension

- Bright Exchange discounts across UK shops, restaurants, gyms and cinemas
- Free eye tests
- Health & wellbeing programme
- Access to e-learning and skills development
- Ongoing professional training

Why this role is worth considering
You will not simply be moving boxes between addresses.
You become part of the wider property-restoration process, working alongside Contents, Fire & Flood Restoration and Strip-Out colleagues and seeing customer belongings move from initial collection through storage or restoration and eventually back into the customer's home.
It is varied work with genuine responsibility. You are being trusted with people's possessions at a time when they may already have experienced significant disruption or loss.
There is also a clear progression route for people who are organised, dependable, good with customers and willing to take ownership.
