EIA Consultant / Environmental Consultant
Location: Derry/Londonderry, with hybrid and flexible working
Salary: £26,000–£36,000, depending on experience

Canavan Associates Ltd (CAL) is an established multidisciplinary consultancy specialising in town planning, environmental assessment, architecture and renewable energy development.
Based in Derry/Londonderry, we work on renewable energy and infrastructure projects across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Due to continued growth, we are seeking an EIA Consultant to join our environmental team.
The Role
Working closely with our Environmental Manager, planning team and external specialists, you will support the coordination and delivery of Environmental Impact Assessments for renewable energy and infrastructure developments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Preparing EIA screening and scoping reports
- Drafting, reviewing and coordinating Environmental Statements and Environmental Impact Assessment Reports
- Supporting the preparation of environmental planning documents and technical reports
- Coordinating inputs from ecologists, ornithologists, hydrologists, landscape consultants, archaeologists and other specialists
- Reviewing specialist reports to identify gaps, inconsistencies and outstanding information
- Maintaining project schedules, trackers and document registers
- Supporting the Environmental Manager to ensure work is accurate and delivered on time
- Undertaking environmental research, baseline reviews and planning policy assessments
- Liaising with clients, planning authorities, statutory consultees and other stakeholders
- Attending project meetings and recording agreed actions
- Supporting responses to requests for further environmental information
About You
You should have:
- A degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Geography, Ecology or a related discipline
- At least two years’ relevant experience in environmental consultancy, EIA, planning or infrastructure development
- Experience preparing or contributing to Environmental Statements, EIARs or related environmental reports
- Strong technical writing, analytical and organisational skills
- The ability to manage competing priorities across several projects
- Good communication skills and confidence working with clients and technical specialists
- Knowledge of the EIA and planning system in Northern Ireland and/or the Republic of Ireland
Experience in both jurisdictions would be particularly valuable, but applications are welcome from candidates with strong experience in either jurisdiction.
Desirable Experience
- Renewable energy, electricity infrastructure or other major developments
- EIA project coordination
- Environmental planning and consenting
- QGIS or ArcGIS
- Membership of, or progress towards membership of, ISEP, IES, RTPI, CIEEM or another relevant professional body
