Trainee Gas Engineer
John Murphy & Company Ltd is looking for a Junior Plumber / Trainee Gas Engineer to join our growing team.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with an NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plumbing & Heating who is looking to gain practical experience and build a long-term career within the commercial mechanical services industry.
This entry level role offers hands on experience across commercial plumbing, heating, gas, and HVAC systems while working alongside experienced senior engineers. You will receive day to day mentoring, practical onsite training, and exposure to a wide range of commercial maintenance and installation works.
Our projects are primarily based within schools, leisure centres, care homes and local authority buildings, providing varied work within a supportive team environment.
What You'll Be Doing
- Supporting qualified commercial gas engineers with servicing, maintenance, and repairs of commercial boilers, heating systems, and hot water systems
- Assisting with plumbing works including pipework, valves, pumps, cylinders, taps, toilets, and TMVs
- Learning how to diagnose faults on commercial heating and plumbing systems
- Supporting air conditioning servicing and installation works
- Assisting with plant room maintenance and mechanical services works
- Supporting water hygiene compliance tasks including temperature monitoring and flushing regimes
- Learning to read technical drawings, schematics, and service documentation
- Using specialist testing equipment and industry tools under supervision
- Completing digital job reports using our tablet based job management system
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who:
- Holds, or is currently working towards, an NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Plumbing & Heating (or equivalent)
- Is motivated to learn and develop a career as a Commercial Gas Engineer
- Enjoys practical, hands on work and problem solving
- Takes pride in delivering high quality work and good customer service
- Is confident using tablet devices and digital job systems
- Is physically fit and comfortable working in a fast paced environment
- Is willing to work during school holidays and occasional Saturdays or bank holidays when required
- Can pass an Enhanced DBS check due to the nature of our client sites
While you will be driven around in a company van by one of our senior engineers during the working day, you must be able to regularly travel to meet them or attend our Slough office. If you do not live locally or do not have access to your own transport, please consider whether this will be possible before applying.
Pay & Development
- Starting salary typically between £21,000 - £26,000 per year depending on qualifications and experience
- Regular pay reviews based on progress and performance
- Ongoing practical training and mentoring from experienced Senior Engineers
- Initial workplace training including Manual Handling, Asbestos Awareness and Working at Height
- Clear progression opportunities towards becoming a fully qualified Commercial Gas Engineer
Our aim is to invest in someone looking for a long-term career. After a minimum of 12 months gaining hands on experience with our Senior Engineers, we will look to support the right candidate through formal commercial gas qualifications and further industry training.
