Main Purpose of the Job:
Responsible for ensuring all food and customer service is the highest quality and served in a timely manner.

Every Sunday 10am – 4:30pm
Flexibility to provide additional weekday cover for events and sickness absence as required. Advance notice will be provided wherever practicable.
Rate: £13.71 per hour
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare and cook all café food to company recipes and presentation standards.
- Ensure food is prepared and served efficiently while maintaining excellent quality and consistency.
- Prepare sandwiches, salads, light lunches, soup and other menu items as required.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels throughout service and communicate any shortages to the Head Chef.
- Carry out food preparation for the following trading week, including batching ingredients, preparing sauces, dressings and other mise en place.
- Label, date and store all prepared food correctly in accordance with food safety procedures.
- Complete all opening and closing kitchen procedures.
- Thoroughly clean and sanitise all kitchen equipment, preparation areas, storage areas and floors at the end of the shift.
- Wash and safely store all utensils, crockery and kitchen equipment.
- Ensure all refrigeration and freezer temperatures are checked and recorded where required.
- Complete all daily due diligence records, including:
Temperature monitoring
Cleaning schedules
Food safety checks
Allergen controls
Delivery and storage records (where applicable)
- Follow all Food Safety, HACCP and Health & Safety procedures at all times.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
- Report any maintenance issues, equipment faults or food safety concerns immediately.
- Work independently to manage kitchen operations during Sunday service while communicating effectively with front of house and Café colleagues.
- Assist with stock counts and identify ingredients requiring replenishment for the following week when required.
- Support special events, afternoon teas or exhibition special menus when required.
- Deliver excellent customer service by ensuring food is prepared promptly and to a high standard.
- Act as the primary point of contact for customers at the open kitchen, engaging with visitors in a friendly, professional and approachable manner.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties requested by the Head Chef or Head of Commercial.
These responsibilities cover the operational aspects of running a Sunday café service while ensuring the kitchen is fully prepared for the week ahead. They also place appropriate emphasis on food safety, cleaning, and due diligence, which are key responsibilities for a lone Sunday chef.
Qualifications:
NVQ Level 3 in Catering
Working Conditions:
The candidate will work in a customer-facing open kitchen, using commercial catering equipment including grills, ovens and fryers. The role involves standing for prolonged periods, working in both hot kitchen and cold storage environments (including a walk-in fridge), and carrying out manual handling tasks such as lifting and moving stock. The successful candidate must maintain high standards of food safety, hygiene and customer service while working independently and completing end-of-day cleaning and closing duties.
