Job Description – Support Worker in a Children’s Home
Overview
A Support Worker in a children’s home provides day-to-day care, guidance, and emotional support to children and young people, often with complex needs or challenging backgrounds. The role focuses on creating a safe, nurturing, and structured environment that promotes personal growth, independence, and well-being.
Key Responsibilities
- Care & Support – Provide practical and emotional support in line with each child’s care plan.
- Daily Living Assistance – Help with routines such as meals, homework, personal care, and recreational activities.
- Relationship Building – Develop trusting, professional relationships with children, encouraging positive behaviour and self-esteem.
- Safeguarding – Ensure the safety and welfare of all children, following safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Record Keeping – Maintain accurate records of incidents, progress, and daily activities.
- Team Collaboration – Work closely with colleagues, social workers, and other professionals to meet each child’s needs.
- Crisis Management – Respond calmly and effectively to challenging behaviour or emotional distress.
- Life Skills Development – Support children in learning skills for independence, such as budgeting, cooking, and self-care.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience in childcare, youth work, or social care (desirable but not always essential).
- Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare or willingness to work towards it).
- Enhanced DBS check.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and sleep-ins.
