Your Role
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is seeking two newly qualified lawyers to assist in the delivery of large scale and high profile transport projects such as the Bee Network, Bus Franchising, Northern Powerhouse Rail/Network North and other transport projects, Active Travel, Cycle Hire, Metrolink expansion and enhancement programmes, the City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement and to support a large and varied Projects and procurement workstream. It is an exciting time to join our supportive in-house team who are passionate about nurturing our lawyers’ careers within the business, providing them with career development and exposure to some fantastic opportunities.
We are recruiting for two newly qualified Commercial lawyers -
i) General commercial with construction: This lawyer will deal with a mix of general commercial matters such as public procurements, IP, data protection, Service legal agreements and construction contracts. As such, experience and/or knowledge of construction law is desirable, including familiarity with standard form construction contracts such as JCT and other industry standard form contracts. While TfGM predominantly uses NEC or bespoke contracts, candidates with transferable experience from other contractual frameworks will be welcomed. An understanding of contractual risk, procurement law and some experience of drafting commercial contracts is also desirable.
ii) Bus Franchising: This lawyer will focus on bus-franchising related contracts and will become au fait with transport legislation and associated regulations. Skills required include attention to detail, an ability to navigate and interpret complex Acts of Parliament and an understanding of public sector regulations and governance. Candidates should also be comfortable supporting on drafting and reviewing franchise and related commercial agreements as well as advising on procurement and contractual risks.
These roles can both be discussed in more detail at interview as candidates may find their skills/experience are suited to one more than the other.
Who are we?
Joining our large and supportive in-house legal team who cover a number of different areas of expertise, you will ultimately be providing legal services to the Organisation in accordance with policy and organisational requirements and dependant on your level of experience you will support or lead on the negotiating and drafting of commercial contractual documentation as well as ensuring that risks, as a result of commercial transactions, are recognised and managed accordingly.

You will be a commercial solicitor/Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives with experience in the commercial field (preferably in a public sector environment but this is not essential). You will have commercial acumen and proven experience of undertaking general commercial matters and transport experience would be an advantage but not essential. You will also have the ability to engage with commercial and public sector partners to secure efficient delivery of Greater Manchester’s ambitious transport and infrastructure project and initiatives.

These are both permanent roles with a salary of £40,650 - £45,107 per annum, dependant on competency and level of post qualification experience.
