Freelance 3D / Exhibition Designer — Museum Fit-Out Project
Makalu, a Leicester-based creative agency, is looking for a freelance 3D/exhibition designer for a museum interpretation and gallery fit-out project.
We're a 2D-led studio (brand, graphic design, interpretation, exhibition graphics) working alongside a client's project team on a heritage exhibition redevelopment. We need a freelance 3D specialist to lead the technical design side, working closely with our design lead through detailed design, procurement, and installation.
What you'll do
- Develop fabrication drawings, technical schedules and installation drawings from approved concept designs
- Specify display case engineering, mounting systems and object-safe fixings
- Prepare tender documentation for fabrication contractors
- Liaise directly with fabricators through procurement and build
- Attend site visits, factory inspections and installation supervision as required
- Work alongside our design and project management team throughout
About you
- Proven 3D/exhibition design experience — museum, gallery or visitor attraction fit-out background preferred
- Comfortable producing fabrication-ready technical drawings and specifications, not just concept visuals
- Experienced working with display case fabricators and conservation-standard requirements
- Able to attend site visits as needed
- Happy working as part of an established creative team, not leading the whole project solo

- Remote-friendly with periodic site visits required
- Please share a portfolio with relevant fabrication drawings or completed exhibition fit-out work, and your day rate
