We are looking for a kind, calm and trustworthy live-in companion for an elderly lady with Alzheimer’s who lives in her own home in Newcastle upon Tyne.
This is a live-in companionship role, not a full personal care role. The main purpose is to provide company, reassurance, light practical support and a calm presence in the home. Formal carers may also be involved separately for personal care and care-package support.
The household is a Muslim family home, so we are looking for someone respectful of the home environment, privacy, modesty, family values and cultural routines. You do not need to be Muslim, but you must be comfortable working in a culturally sensitive household.
This role may suit a mature student, healthcare/social care student, postgraduate, or someone who works part-time elsewhere and is looking for a calm live-in arrangement. The person must still be available for agreed companionship and light support at set times, especially evenings or other times agreed with the family.
The role may include:
- Friendly companionship and reassurance
- Being present in the home during agreed times
- Light meal preparation or support with meals
- Light household help, such as tidying shared areas and putting bins out
- Encouraging routine, structure and a calm home environment
- Helping remind her about appointments where agreed
- Supporting with simple appointment preparation
- Accompanying her to local GP or hospital appointments if agreed in advance
- Letting the family know if there are any concerns
- Liaising appropriately with family members and formal care providers
This role does not include:
- Personal care such as bathing, toileting or dressing
- Heavy lifting or moving/handling
- Administering medication
- Managing finances, bank cards, PIN numbers or cash
- Handling jewellery, legal documents or personal financial matters
- Making medical or care decisions
About you:
We are looking for someone who is patient, honest, reliable, emotionally mature, clean and respectful in the home. You must be comfortable around elderly people and dementia-related behaviours, including confusion, repetition or anxiety.
Previous experience with dementia, elderly care, social care, healthcare, support work, nursing, medicine, psychology or occupational therapy would be helpful, but the right attitude and maturity are most important.
Strict vetting required:
- Enhanced DBS check, or consent for one to be carried out
- Two recent references
- Proof of ID
- Proof of right to work / right to rent in the UK
- Proof of address
- Agreement to a trial period
- Agreement to a written role description, household rules and safeguarding boundaries
Accommodation will be provided in the home as part of the live-in arrangement. Exact hours, expectations, time off, contribution/payment arrangement and start date will be discussed and agreed with the right person.
To apply, please send a short introduction, your relevant background, current work/study situation, availability, and confirmation that you are willing to complete an Enhanced DBS check and provide references.
Pay: £11.10 per hour
Work Location: In person
