Job Description – Teaching Assistant
Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to support pupils who may be disengaged, at risk, or vulnerable. This role is integral to helping young people overcome barriers to learning by providing tailored support, encouragement, and guidance, enabling them to achieve their full potential both academically and personally.
Working as part of a supportive team, you will contribute to creating a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment where every pupil has the opportunity to succeed.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and small-group support to pupils with a range of educational, social, emotional, and behavioural needs.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to promote engagement, confidence, and wellbeing.
- Support the implementation of personalised learning and behaviour support plans.
- Assist teachers in delivering engaging learning activities and maintaining an inclusive classroom environment.
- Encourage pupils to develop independence, resilience, and positive attitudes towards learning.
- Monitor pupil progress and provide feedback to teaching staff.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents/carers, and external professionals to support pupil outcomes.
- Promote safeguarding, welfare, and the wellbeing of all pupils in line with organisational policies.
- Contribute positively to the wider life of the school and support extracurricular activities where appropriate.
Person Specification Essential Skills and Experience
- A genuine passion for supporting disengaged, at-risk, and vulnerable young people.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to build positive and professional relationships with pupils, colleagues, and parents/carers.
- Empathy, patience, resilience, and a calm approach when working with young people facing challenges.
- Ability to adapt support strategies to meet individual pupil needs.
- Flexible, proactive, and solution-focused approach to work.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Desirable
- Previous experience working with children or young people in an educational or care setting.
- Knowledge of SEND, SEMH, or behaviour support strategies.
- Relevant Teaching Assistant qualification or willingness to undertake further training.
