Start Date: Autumn 2026
Pay: £18.00–£24.00+ per hour, depending on responsibilities

About the Role
Guildford Rock School is looking for an enthusiastic and highly organised Music Teacher & Operations Coordinator to join our growing team.
This is a varied hybrid role combining practical music teaching with responsibility for supporting the day-to-day administration and operation of the school. It would suit someone who loves teaching young people but is also organised, proactive and interested in developing a broader career within music education.
You will teach instrumental lessons and potentially lead Rock Band Clubs, while also helping to manage parent enquiries, timetables, student records, teacher administration and the systems that keep Guildford Rock School running smoothly.
The operations element of the position will primarily be completed from home. Initially, you will work closely with the Director through regular face-to-face training sessions in Guildford. As your knowledge and confidence develop, you will gradually take ownership of recurring operational responsibilities and work increasingly independently.
Teaching Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, well-structured instrumental lessons to children and young people
- Teach individual students and, where appropriate, small groups
- Adapt lessons to suit different ages, abilities and learning styles
- Help students develop confidence, musicianship and enjoyment of playing
- Prepare students for performances and optional graded examinations where appropriate
- Maintain accurate attendance and lesson records
- Communicate professionally with students, parents and the Guildford Rock School team
- Potentially lead hour-long after-school Rock Band Clubs, depending on experience and instrumental ability
We currently offer tuition in drums, guitar, bass, piano/keys, ukulele and singing. Confidence teaching more than one instrument would be particularly valuable, although applicants with a strong specialism in one of our core instruments will also be considered.
Operations and Administration Responsibilities
- Respond to enquiries from prospective and existing parents
- Support student enrolment and onboarding
- Help manage student and teacher timetables
- Maintain accurate records within My Music Staff
- Support routine invoicing and payment administration
- Liaise with teachers regarding schedules, students and lesson information
- Communicate with schools regarding regular lesson provision
- Assist with teacher recruitment, onboarding and documentation
- Help improve internal systems, processes and written resources
- Support marketing, student recruitment and the continued growth of Guildford Rock School
- Gradually take ownership of recurring operational tasks currently handled by the Director
The operational side of this position will focus on the everyday running and development of GRS. Performance events and holiday-club coordination are managed separately by existing members of the team.
What We’re Looking For
- A confident and capable musician
- Practical teaching ability on at least one of our core instruments
- Experience teaching or working with children and young people
- An engaging, patient and encouraging teaching style
- Excellent organisation and attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Comfortable communicating with parents, teachers and schools
- Confident using online systems, spreadsheets and everyday administrative software
- Proactive and able to identify what needs doing without constant supervision
- Reliable, punctual and professional
- Able to balance several areas of responsibility effectively
- Interested in contributing to the longer-term development of Guildford Rock School
- Flexible availability
- A suitable home-working environment and reliable internet connection
- An existing Enhanced DBS certificate
- Right to work in the UK
- A full driving licence and access to suitable personal transport
Experience in music-school administration, scheduling, customer service, business operations or a similar coordinating role would be advantageous, but is not essential if you have strong transferable skills.
Location and Working Arrangements
The operations and administration element of this position will primarily be completed from home. The successful candidate will therefore need a suitable home-working environment, reliable internet access and the ability to communicate during agreed working hours.
During the initial training and onboarding period, regular face-to-face working sessions will take place at the Director’s dedicated home office in Guildford. This will allow the successful candidate to learn GRS systems, processes and responsibilities with hands-on support.
As their knowledge and confidence develop, the operations work will become increasingly independent and primarily home-based, with occasional in-person meetings where useful.
Instrumental teaching and Rock Band Club work will take place in person at Silent Hill Studios and partner schools in Guildford and the surrounding area.
Hours and Working Pattern
We expect the position to begin at approximately 10 hours per week, with scope for the overall role to grow over time.
The teaching timetable is likely to start at around 3 hours per week, building gradually towards approximately five hours as suitable students and opportunities become available. The remaining hours will initially focus on operations and administration.
Some teaching hours may take place on Saturday mornings, as we intend to develop a new weekend teaching session for the successful candidate.
Once the teaching timetable is established, we expect the role to comprise approximately 50% teaching and 50% operations and administration. The precise balance may vary depending on the successful candidate’s skills and the needs of GRS.
As the role develops and the business grows, the balance may gradually shift towards greater operational and administrative responsibility.
Teaching may take place during the school day at partner schools, or during afternoons, early evenings and Saturday mornings at our studio, depending on the session. Operations and administration work can be scheduled more flexibly during daytime hours, provided the successful candidate has sufficient weekday availability to respond to parents, teachers and schools.
Pay
Different hourly rates will apply to the teaching and operational elements of the role:
- Teaching: £22.00 per hour during probation, rising to £24.00+ following successful completion
- Operations and administration: £18.00 per hour during probation, rising to £20.00 following successful completion
Final rates will reflect experience, responsibilities and the type of teaching undertaken.
Probation and Development
The successful candidate will begin with a three-month probation period. This will provide structured time to learn the role, receive regular support and demonstrate their suitability across both its teaching and operational responsibilities.
Responsibilities will be introduced gradually throughout probation. Following successful completion, the intention is for the successful candidate to become a trusted, long-term member of the GRS team, with increased independence, responsibility and scope for additional hours.
