We're converting the old nightclub on North Promenade into 8 apartments and a penthouse. There's around 32 tonnes of structural steel going into it and we're looking for the right person to fabricate it.
This is a job for an individual, not a company. If you're time-served, coded, and either between jobs, made redundant, or looking for a proper run of work alongside what you already do — this could suit you well.
WHAT THE JOB IS
Fabricating the steel frame: cutting to length, drilling, welding end plates, cleats, stiffeners, base plates and bearing plates. S275 sections — UBs, UCs and SHS. Working to the structural engineer's drawings and connection details.
That's it. You fabricate. We're getting someone else in to erect it, unless you're qualified and want that side too.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
- The workshop. We've got the whole building — big open spaces, plenty of room to set up and work under cover.
- Equipment. Tell us what you need and we'll sort it.
- Steel, consumables, everything delivered to you.
- All the paperwork and coordination. We deal with the structural engineer, the architect and Building Control. You won't be chasing anyone or filling in forms.
- Steady, regular pay. Self-employed (CIS) or on the books — your choice.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
- A current coded welder certificate (BS EN ISO 9606-1) — in date, covering MAG welding on structural steel, fillet and butt welds. If yours has lapsed, tell us, it may be fixable.
- Experience with structural steel specifically. Beams, columns, connections — not ornamental or general fabrication.
- You can read structural drawings and connection details and work from them without being walked through it.
- CSCS card, or willing to get one.
- You're comfortable working to an approved welding procedure and having your welds inspected. There'll be an independent inspector spot-checking, and the structural engineer will sign the work off. Nothing unusual, just how a residential job has to be done.
HOW IT'LL WORK
We'll sit down with you and the structural engineer at the start so you understand the whole frame, not just your bit — what's carrying what, and why the connections are detailed the way they are. If you spot something that would be easier or better done a different way, we want to hear it. You'll be talking to the engineer directly, not through three other people.
