IKM Network Communications Ltd provides network infrastructure solutions across a wide range of commercial and residential environments. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Trainee Data Cabling Engineer to join our friendly and experienced team, working in Cardiff and the surrounding areas.
This role would suit someone looking to begin a career in the data cabling industry or develop practical cabling installation skills. No previous industry experience is required—just a willingness to learn, a positive attitude and a strong work ethic.

Key responsibilities
- Assist with cabling installation work under supervision.
- Use hand tools and equipment safely.
- Follow IKM’s Health and Safety Policy and site-specific risk assessments and method statements.
- Develop your technical knowledge and practical skills over time.
- Complete training towards relevant industry, ECS and health and safety qualifications.
Skills and requirements
- Good teamwork and communication skills.

- Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
- Flexibility to work different hours when required by clients.
· Physical fitness, as the role involves manual handling, including lifting cable reels and working indoors and outdoors.
- Basic practical skills, such as experience using hand tools, would be helpful.
- Willingness to undertake occasional evening or weekend work and travel or stay away overnight when required.
- The ability to travel reliably to different work locations is essential. A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle would be beneficial but are not essential.
Education and experience
- GCSE grade 4 or above in Maths and English, or equivalent, is preferred.
- No previous industry experience is required, as full training will be provided.
Additional details
- Job type: Full-time, permanent.
- Location: Cardiff and the surrounding areas. Applicants should live within a reasonable travelling distance and be able to attend work and site locations reliably.
- Salary: £25,389–£29,750 per year, depending on experience and qualifications and subject to the applicable National Minimum Wage rate.
- Hours: 45 paid hours per week.
- Schedule: Usually Monday to Friday, with opportunities for paid overtime and occasional evening or weekend work.
- Holiday: 28 days per year, including bank holidays, plus an additional day off for your birthday following successful completion of probation.
- Work location: On site; remote working is not available.
Due to the requirements of some projects, the successful candidate will need to complete an appropriate DBS check. We will explain the level of check required before it is carried out.
