DEPARTMENT: Content Delivery Operations
LOCATION: Salford
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to £28,900 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
This role requires shift working including overnight shifts
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The aim of the role is to work as part of a team on a regular shift pattern, including weekend and overnight shifts, to ensure the smooth running of operational workflows required by our live services, including TV and iPlayer and to ensure that the capability to deliver those services is maintained. An Operations Technician (OT) in the Content Delivery Operation will undertake defined processes within a range of workflows as well as working to resolve any issues encountered or escalating through defined routes.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
Content Delivery Operations (CDO) is a vibrant 24/7 team responsible for the entire file-based delivery workflow for BBC Linear TV channels, BBC iPlayer and BBC Red Button services throughout the UK. The CDO team is the integral link between production of a programme and bringing it to our audiences.
Content Delivery Operations receive, validate and then distribute BBC programmes for Playout, Access Services, Archives and other key stakeholders across the BBC. The file validation process ensures that all media sent from post-production facilities meets the strict Digital Production Partnership (DPP) & BBC Technical Specifications. All file delivered programmes must be accounted for by CDO to ensure their readiness for transmission and online devices. CDO is responsible for publishing all content on BBC iPlayer.
The team captures live programmes off-air and guarantees all pre-delivered assets pass quality control checks. The BBC is required by OFCOM to provide audio description and subtitles to the hearing and visually impaired; therefore, CDO makes sure all playback options are available on platform. It is also CDO’s responsibility to revoke the availability of unsuitable programmes from BBC iPlayer and blank content without streaming rights. As well as video, CDO also manages audio and works alongside BBC Radio & Music to publish and replace files for BBC Sounds. CDO publishes calls to action on the Connected Red Button service.
CDO also monitor live streams and channels, responding to broadcast alarms, raising and resolving incident tickets, and liaising with production teams to support issue resolution. Provide in hours and out of hours monitoring for Silver and iB3 services, manage content delivery and schedules within Evertz.io, and ensure accurate logging and closure of all incidents.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Monitor and manage content delivery workflows, ensuring programmes and access services are validated, published and available to audiences on time.
- Troubleshoot operational issues across broadcast and digital platforms, resolving incidents where possible and escalating complex problems appropriately.
- Act as a key point of contact for production, scheduling and operational teams, providing timely support and guidance on content delivery and publication.
- Maintain high standards of quality control by checking content, tracking workflow progress and ensuring adherence to agreed processes and best practice.
- Support live and reactive broadcasting operations, responding quickly to changing priorities, transmission-critical issues and editorial requirements.
- Identify trends, anomalies and opportunities for improvement, contributing to the development of operational processes, documentation and workflows.
- Accurately log, prioritise and track incidents, collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders to ensure reliable services for internal teams and audiences.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Good understanding of end-to-end operational workflows; their purpose and typical requirements with a working knowledge of workflow requirements from a technical perspective – how components are inter-reliant and impact the workflow if they experience issues
- Experience of overcoming and anticipating challenges in operational processes, and typical actions to fix
- A high degree of computer literacy combined with effective administrative skills with a flexible approach to a wide range of duties.
- Experience in a pressured operational, support or customer-facing role, preferably in supporting live services with tight deadlines.
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
- Able to spot indicators which suggest an issue within a workflow, whether through proactive monitoring or responding to an unexpected variation
- Appreciation of support structures, and the principles of escalation in cases where a fix is required but cannot be performed
- Ability to work autonomously, handling most queries and problems without additional team support
If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
Before your start date, you may need to disclose any unspent convictions or police charges, in line with our Contracts of Employment policy. This allows us to discuss any support you may need and assess any risks. Failure to disclose may result in the withdrawal of your offer.
