Job Introduction
An exciting opportunity is available for three Engineering Specialists to join National Grid Electricity Distribution. We currently have two vacancies within the Capital Delivery Projects team, with positions based in Hinckley and Grantham, and one vacancy within the Maintenance team, based in Hinckley.
Reporting to an Operations/Team Manager, you will be responsible for the installation, commissioning, maintenance and delivery of a range of underground, overhead, plant and protection systems on the distribution network and at operational sites up to and including 132kV.
The Capital Delivery Projects team is responsible for delivering a significant programme of network investment projects across National Grid Electricity Distribution's network. As an Engineering Specialist within this team, you will contribute to the successful delivery of a multi-billion-pound capital investment programme designed to improve network resilience, support customer connections, facilitate decarbonisation and enable the transition to a smarter energy system. Working collaboratively with a range of departments and external contractors, you will play a key role in safely delivering projects from construction through to commissioning.
The Maintenance team is responsible for ensuring the ongoing reliability, performance and safety of the distribution network and operational sites. As an Engineering Specialist within the Maintenance team, you will carry out planned and corrective maintenance activities on underground, overhead, plant and protection assets up to and including 132kV. Working closely with operational colleagues, you will help maintain network integrity, minimise disruptions and support the long-term performance of critical infrastructure.
- Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.
Main Responsibilities
- Install and commission Underground, Overhead, Plant and Protection systems on the 132kV and 33kV network.

Manage and control project work involving plant, overhead and underground systems, including responsibility for: -

Project safety (including compliance with CDM regulations)

Project finances
-
Project related network risk
-
Procurement and contractor Management, managing a range of projects using the APMP model and report on KPIs throughout their lifecycle.

Undertake operational duties on the distribution network, including the issuing of safety documentation up to 132kV.

Arrange planned EHV network outages, schedule appointments with customers and issue third-party shutdown notices.

Demonstrate leadership, seeking assistance where work extends beyond your capability or authority.

Manage your own short-term work programme, adapting to changing priorities within agreed constraints.

Assist with the assessment and authorisation of operational staff.

Provide advice to colleagues on innovations in electricity network management and automation systems.

Liaise with other specialists and stakeholders across the business.

Participate on an operational standby rota as part of this role
The Ideal Candidate
- Practical knowledge of protection and control systems, including the commissioning of such equipment and familiarity with specifications for plant.

A level 3 City & Guilds 2339 qualification; candidates not already qualified will be required to undertake HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Ideally be a Senior Authorised Person on 132kV electricity network with experience working for a Distribution Network Operator (DNO), Independent DNO (IDNO) or Independent Connection Provider (ICP).

Proven experience in working in a high hazard industry, with strong commitment to health and safety and knowledge of construction management regulations (CDM 2015).

Experience in formally managing projects, including financial monitoring and reporting.

Self-motivated and adaptable, with the ability to work autonomously and remain effective under pressure.

A commitment to the highest standards of quality, safety and operational discipline.

Willingness to travel across the network services area and participate in standby duties in line with a predefined rota.
Appropriate training and support will be given in order for the successful candidate to realise their full potential within the role. This may mean appointment on a designate basis while practical training is undertaken associated with Operational and Technical skills.
