This role is ideally suited to an experienced Plant Engineer, Field Service Engineer, Mobile Engineer, Construction Equipment Engineer or Machine Control Engineer with a background in construction plant, agricultural machinery, heavy equipment or related industries.
The role involves regular travel throughout the UK and occasional overnight stays.
The Role
You will be responsible for installing, commissioning, maintaining and supporting machine control and safety systems fitted to construction plant and heavy equipment. Working closely with customers, manufacturers and internal teams, you will ensure equipment operates safely, accurately and efficiently whilst delivering an excellent customer experience.
You will work with industry-leading technologies including Trimble, Leica, Topcon, Xwatch and Safety Shield systems.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Control & Safety Systems
- Install, configure, calibrate and commission Leica Machine control Systems
- Install, maintain and troubleshoot safety systems including Xwatch, Safety Shield and associated technologies.
- Diagnose and rectify electrical, electronic and system faults on construction plant and equipment.
- Carry out system testing, calibration and performance checks to ensure optimum operation.
- Complete software and firmware updates in accordance with manufacturer requirements.
- Ensure all installations and repairs are completed to manufacturer specifications and Company standards.
- Support machine control and safety system upgrades across the fleet.
Field Service & Engineering Support
- Attend customer sites and Company depots to carry out installations, repairs and fault-finding activities.
- Provide engineering support relating to machine control and safety systems fitted to construction equipment.
- Investigate technical issues and implement effective solutions both remotely and on-site.
- Produce accurate service reports, installation records and job documentation.
- Liaise with manufacturers and suppliers regarding technical issues and warranty matters where required.
Training & Development
- Deliver basic operator familiarisation and customer training following installation.
- Support the development of Synergy Hire employees through knowledge sharing and technical guidance.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of machine control systems, safety technologies and industry developments.
Communication & Collaboration
- Maintain regular communication with the SCT Manager and Service Controllers regarding job progress and equipment status.
- Work closely with depot teams, workshop personnel and operational staff.
- Build strong working relationships with customers, manufacturers and suppliers.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Carry out all work in accordance with Company Health & Safety procedures.
- Ensure compliance with manufacturer guidance, industry standards and best practice.
- Promote a positive safety culture and challenge unsafe behaviours where identified.
- Maintain Company vehicles, tools and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition.
- Ensure all work is completed safely within construction and plant operating environments.
Quality & Standards
- Complete all work to a high professional standard and within agreed timescales.
- Maintain accurate records and service documentation.
- Ensure a clean, organised and professional working environment at all times.
General Responsibilities
- Take responsibility for personal performance and continuous professional development.
- Participate in manufacturer and internal training programmes as required.
- Undertake any other duties reasonably required by the Company consistent with the level of the role.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Experience working on construction plant, heavy equipment, agricultural machinery or similar mobile equipment.
- Strong electrical and electronic fault-finding skills.
- Experience installing, maintaining or supporting machine control systems, safety systems or related equipment.
- Good understanding of GPS, GNSS, machine guidance or surveying technology.
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, installation drawings and technical schematics.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Willingness to travel nationally and stay away from home when required.
- Ability to work safely within construction and plant environments.
Desirable
- Experience with Trimble, Leica or Topcon machine control systems.
- Experience with Xwatch, Safety Shield or other plant safety technologies.
- Background as a Plant Fitter, Mobile Engineer, Field Service Engineer or Construction Equipment Engineer.
- CSCS, CPCS or other relevant industry qualifications.
- CANBUS diagnostic experience.
- Manufacturer training, accreditation or certification.
- Knowledge of excavators, earthmoving equipment and construction plant.
