Due to continued market development, we are now seeking to appoint a Design Engineer based at our Nottingham office at NG2 Business Park.
Job Purpose:
The role will be responsible for producing detailed, compliant fire alarm designs following contract award, ensuring all systems are designed in accordance with project specifications, applicable standards, and client requirements.
Working closely with Sales, Project Managers, Installation Engineers, Commissioning Engineers, Consultants and Clients, you will develop and maintain technical design documentation throughout the project lifecycle, supporting projects from initial design through to completion.
Responsibilities
- Produce detailed fire alarm system designs in accordance with BS 5839, relevant codes of practice, and project specifications.
- Review client specifications, tender documentation, drawings and site survey information.
- Prepare detailed quotations, estimates and tender responses.
- Develop construction-ready drawings, device layouts, zoning plans, network schematics and equipment schedules.
- Create design documentation including cause-and-effect matrices, battery calculations, cable calculations and technical submittals.
- Review contract documentation, consultant specifications, and construction drawings.
- Attend design review meetings and coordinate with project stakeholders.
- Liaise with manufacturers, consultants, contractors and end users to ensure design compliance and project success.
- Support project teams during installation, commissioning and handover phases.
- Manage design revisions and maintain accurate project records.
- Assist with project variation estimations
- Assist with technical problem-solving and value engineering where appropriate
About You
- Proven experience designing fire alarm systems within the fire and security industry.
- FIA qualifications or other recognised industry certifications.
- Strong understanding of BS 5839 and fire detection system design principles.
- Experience with addressable fire alarm systems and leading manufacturers.
- Knowledge of emergency voice communication, PA/VA and integrated life safety systems.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications and consultant documentation.
- Experience producing technical quotations and cost estimates.
- Excellent technical, organisational and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Competent in AutoCAD or similar design software (Desirable)
- Understanding of security systems including CCTV, access control and intruder alarms (Desirable)
- Full driving licence.
