Job Summary
Cockburnspath Community Shop is situated in the heart of the village of Cockburnspath and has operated for over 5 years. Starting completely from scratch it has operated very successfully over the years and has become the hub of the local community. We are open Monday – Saturday 8am to 6 pm and Sunday 9am to 4pm.
We are seeking to appoint a full-time Shop Manager (although a jobshare may be considered), who is proactive, organised, reliable, possesses good communication skills, has good IT skills and who can co-ordinate and manage our team of loyal volunteers and staff. The successful candidate will either already possess a Personal Alcohol Licence or be prepared to acquire one immediately upon appointment.
The Manager will be responsible to the Management Committee of the Community Benefit Society, Cockburnspath Community Enterprise Limited.
The Manager will work, on average, a 38 hour week. The salary will be in the region of £32,000 per annum, depending upon experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Responsibilities
· Achieve sales targets and manage costs, both of purchasing stock and running expenses of Shop
· Ensure sound financial procedures are followed including handling cash, banking and payments to suppliers.
· Maintain accurate records and financial documentation
· Provide monthly reports to the Management Committee and assist with year end accounting.
Management of Shop
· Responsible for opening and closing of Shop securely as required
· Overseeing the ordering, receipt, pricing, display and rotation of stock
· Maintaining a safe working environment, including ensuring that all Health & Safety requirements are complied with, including maintenance of Food Hygiene standards
· Ensuring that the premises, both internally and externally, are kept clean and tidy at all times.
· Ensure that all shop procedures and policies are implemented and maintained.
Leading and Developing Team
· To recruit as required, manage and support a team of volunteers and junior staff
· Plan rotas, delegate tasks and ensure adequate shop cover
· Provide induction training, further training as needed, feedback and development opportunities to help volunteers
· Communicate with volunteers and staff on a regular basis
· Promote teamwork, inclusion, wellbeing and community spirit at all times.
Community Engagement
· Liaise with local groups, schools and outside agencies regarding work placements, projects and community activities
· Support and promote the Shop through Social Media and also in the Community
· Encourage participation and positive relationships within the local community
General Duties
· Undertake any other reasonable duties required to support the successful operation of the Community Shop
Person specification
Essential experience and skills
· Proven experience in retail management
· Experience with managing or supervising staff and/or volunteers
· Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and manage workloads effectively
· Commercial awareness with the ability to interpret sales data
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
· Ability to communicate well with staff, volunteers, customers and the public
· Good numeracy skills and a knowledge of retail finance, including cash handling and banking procedures
· Confident IT Skills, including tills, card payments, Xero (or similar) and MS Office
· Ability to use social media to promote Shop
· Physically able to move boxes of stock safely
· Possession of a Personal Alcohol Licence or the ability to acquire one immediately
· Possession of a current Food Hygiene Certificate or the ability to acquire one immediately.
Working arrangements
· Hours will be worked on a rota across the week, including some weekend working and opening or closing shifts. An opening shift commences at 7am Monday – Saturday. Shifts may vary from week to week.
· Some flexibility will be required to cover holidays of other staff or unavailability of volunteers
· The place of work is at Cockburnspath Community Shop, Callander Place, Cockburnspath TD13 5XY or such other location it may move to.
· Pension arrangements are in place through Nest.
