Working within J. Carney Construction’s Major Civils Division in our Birmingham office, and forming part of the Commercial Team, the Quantity Surveyor plays an integral role in delivering exceptional commercial results.
Core responsibilities include project delivery, commercial reporting, and maximising profitability across all schemes.
Reporting to the Commercial Manager, you will support both the Commercial and Contract Delivery Teams to ensure:
- Profitability
- Effective cash management
- Robust change control
- Accurate cost control
- Timely and precise commercial reporting
Key Responsibilities
Commercial and Financial Management
- Contribute to application and credit control processes
- Assist with income forecasting and pricing of variations
- Support change control procedures
- Understand and assess project risk
- Assist in the production of CVRs (Cost Value Reconciliations)
- Support Cost to Complete (CTC) reporting
- Contribute to forecasting data production
- Assist in managing the full subcontract cycle, including input into subcontract documentation
- Support preparation of monthly financial performance reports
Project & Operational Support
- Upload documentation in line with business requirements
- Review weekly site records, including allocation sheets and site diaries
- Attend project progress meetings
- Gain experience outside the commercial function to better understand the wider business and the role of the Quantity Surveyor

- Support the use of lean tools to improve efficiency and reduce waste
- Encourage and assist collaborative planning with contract delivery teams

Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred)
Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in surveying (preferred)
- Experience managing contract under NEC3/NEC4 suite of contracts, with focus on Option B
Licence/Certification
- Full UK Driving Licence (preferred)
- CSCS card
Location Requirement
- Must reliably commute to Birmingham (B46 1DP) or plan to relocate prior to starting
