Fleet Maintenance Manager

Due to continued growth, we are looking for an experienced Fleet Maintenance Manager to oversee the maintenance, servicing and compliance of our expanding fleet.
The Role
Reporting to the Operations Director, you will take full responsibility for planning, coordinating and managing all fleet maintenance activities.
You will lead our workshop team, coordinate external suppliers and ensure our vehicles and plant remain safe, compliant and available for hire.
This is a hands-on management role requiring strong leadership, planning and technical knowledge.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the workshop.
- Lead and supervise workshop fitters and maintenance staff.
- Plan and coordinate all servicing, inspections, MOTs and preventative maintenance.
- Ensure maximum fleet availability while minimising downtime.
- Manage the maintenance of:
- HGVs
- Tippers
- Flatbed wagons
- Tankers
- Welfare vehicles
- Commercial vans and pickups
- Excavators
- Specialist plant and attachments
- Prioritise repairs to meet operational requirements.
- Allocate work to workshop technicians and monitor progress.
- Coordinate external repair agents and specialist contractors.
- Arrange breakdown recovery and emergency repairs nationwide.
- Ensure all defects are rectified promptly.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and service schedules.
- Ensure compliance with DVSA Operator Licence requirements.
- Manage LOLER, PUWER and statutory inspection schedules where applicable.
- Monitor maintenance costs and workshop budgets.
- Order parts and manage supplier relationships.
- Work closely with the Transport, Hire Desk and Operations teams to ensure fleet availability.
- Identify opportunities to improve fleet reliability, reduce costs and increase operational efficiency.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience managing a commercial vehicle or heavy plant workshop.
- Strong technical knowledge of HGVs and heavy plant.
- Experience managing workshop fitters and maintenance teams.
- Excellent understanding of preventative maintenance planning.
- Knowledge of DVSA maintenance standards and Operator Licence requirements.
- Strong organisational and planning skills.
- Excellent communication and leadership ability.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
- HGV Technician qualification.
- Experience within plant hire, construction or specialist equipment hire.
- Knowledge of tankers, welfare units and hydraulic equipment.
- Experience using fleet maintenance software.
- IRTEC qualification.
- LOLER and PUWER knowledge.

The Person
We're looking for a proactive leader who enjoys running a busy workshop, solving problems and keeping a large fleet operating at maximum efficiency. You'll be equally comfortable planning maintenance schedules, supporting your workshop team and working alongside our transport and operations departments to ensure our customers receive first-class service.
This advert will attract candidates capable of managing a fleet worth tens of millions of pounds, rather than someone who simply supervises a small garage. It's pitched at the level of a maintenance manager for a large commercial fleet.
Pay: £45,000.00-£52,000.00 per year
