Groundworker / Skilled Labourer – Construction & Farm

Pay: £15.00–£18.00 per hour, depending on experience
Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:30am–4:30pm (45 paid hours per week)
We are looking for an experienced Groundworker / Skilled Labourer to join our team working across our construction sites, yard and working farm.
This is a varied, practical role suited to someone who enjoys hands-on work and is comfortable turning their hand to different jobs. The work will vary from day to day depending on what is required across our construction projects and farm.
A full UK driving licence is essential, along with at least two years' experience in construction, groundworks, agriculture or a similar practical role.
Groundworks & Construction Duties
Duties will include:
- Laying drainage
- Concreting
- Digging and preparing foundations and footings
- Preparing sites before construction begins
- Installing fencing and fence posts
- Laying flags and paving
- Preparing for and pouring concrete
- General groundworks
- Assisting skilled trades as a second person when required
- Moving and distributing building materials around site
- Collecting and delivering materials
- Removing waste and keeping sites clean and organised
- Working at height where required
Plant & Machinery
Applicants must have good practical experience operating at least one type of plant or agricultural machinery.
Equipment used within the business includes:
- Telehandlers
- Tractors
- Mini excavators
- 13-tonne excavators
- Forklifts
- Rollers
Formal plant tickets are not essential, provided you can demonstrate that you are competent and experienced.
Experience on every machine is not expected. Training can be provided for additional equipment for someone who already has good machinery experience and aptitude.
Telehandler and/or tractor experience would be particularly useful.
Farm & Yard Duties
The role also involves assisting with the day-to-day operation of our beef cattle farm and yard. Duties may include:
- Feeding cattle
- Handling and moving cattle
- Assisting other staff when cattle are being handled or receiving veterinary treatment
- Tractor work
- General farm and yard maintenance
- Keeping the farm, yard and working areas clean and organised
Previous livestock experience would be beneficial but is not essential if you are confident around animals and willing to learn.
Essential Requirements
- Full UK driving licence
- Minimum two years' experience in construction, groundworks, agriculture or another relevant practical role
- Good experience operating at least one type of plant or agricultural machinery
- Able to demonstrate safe and competent machinery operation
- Comfortable undertaking physical work and working outdoors
- Comfortable working at height
- Reliable and able to work effectively as part of a small team
- Willing and able to undertake a varied range of practical duties
Desirable Experience
Experience in any of the following would be particularly useful:
- Groundworks
- Drainage
- Concreting
- Flagging/paving
- Telehandler operation
- Excavator operation
- Tractor operation
- Forklift operation
- Fencing
- Cattle or livestock handling
Hours & Employment
The normal working week is Monday to Friday, 6:30am–4:30pm, 45 paid hours per week. 7am-5pm may also be considered to suit the right candidate.
Overtime is minimal. On rare occasions there may be an opportunity to cover basic weekend farm duties when the business owner is unavailable. This is optional and is not a regular requirement of the role.
The position is permanent PAYE employment and includes:
- Weekly pay
- Statutory holiday entitlement
- Bank holidays
- Six-month probationary period
- Two weeks' notice by either party during probation
- Additional unpaid leave may be agreed with reasonable prior notice
The business normally closes for approximately two weeks over Christmas. Employees should therefore plan their annual leave allowance accordingly.
We are looking for someone who wants a long-term position and takes pride in practical work. The ideal candidate will be capable, dependable and comfortable working across a mixture of construction, groundworks, machinery and farm duties.
