About the role
Balfour Beatty is recruiting for a Highways Maintenance Operative to join our Lincolnshire Highways Maintenance Contract, within our UKCS Living Places business.
This role will support the delivery of highways maintenance services across Lincolnshire, helping to keep roads, footways and public spaces safe, operational and well maintained. You’ll be part of a team carrying out reactive, emergency, routine, cyclical and winter maintenance activities, ensuring all works are completed safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
The role will be based on the Lincolnshire contract, covering one of the following depot locations: Sturton, Horncastle, Sleaford or Pode Hole.
What you'll be doing
As a Highways Maintenance Operative, you’ll be responsible for carrying out a wide range of highways maintenance activities, including minor civils, temporary and permanent repairs, emergency attendance, making sites safe and supporting winter service operations.
Your work will include:
- Carrying out highways maintenance tasks safely, efficiently and to a high standard
- Supporting reactive, routine, cyclical and emergency works across the contract
- Completing work instructions issued via handheld devices
- Undertaking minor civils works, repairs and site safety activities
- Supporting out-of-hours emergency response where required
- Assisting with winter service delivery, including gritting operations
- Using plant, equipment, machinery and materials effectively
- Helping to ensure work is completed right first time and in line with programme requirements
- Reporting Close Calls, Good Practices and any health and safety observations
- Working in line with Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm culture and company procedures
- Providing a professional, customer-focused service and acting as an ambassador for Balfour Beatty

You’ll be a reliable and adaptable team player with a positive attitude, good communication skills and a willingness to learn. You should be comfortable working in a customer-facing environment and able to follow instructions, work accurately and contribute to a safe and professional working culture.
Experience in any of the following areas would be desirable:
- Carriageway pothole and patch repairs
- Highways civils
- Drainage works
- Ironworks
- Concreting
- Kerbing, block laying or slabbing
- Traffic management
- Winter maintenance or gritting operations
- Plant awareness and manual handling
The following qualifications would also be beneficial, although not essential:
- Class 2 Licence
- NRSWA
- First Aid
- Lantra T1 or T2
- CSCS
- Abrasive Wheels
- Manual Handling
- Banksman
- NVQ Winter Service
- Roller or Dumper
- CPC
