We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Kitchen Assistant to support our culinary team in delivering high-quality food services.
Main function of the job:

To maintain catering assistance and cleaning services skills at a current level and undertake such training and development as may from time-to-time be required to maintain that currency of practice. Ladysmith care home uses meals provide by Apetito, Apetito is a leading food producer that creates high-quality, nutritionally balanced frozen meals for care homes, hospitals, schools, and individuals. Prepared by specialist chefs and in-house dietitians.
To provide catering assistance and cleaning services within The Home in accordance with agreed standards. This role involves assisting with meal preparation, maintaining kitchen hygiene, and ensuring smooth operational flow within a busy catering . The ideal candidate will have a passion for food, a keen eye for safety, and a willingness to learn new skills. This position offers valuable experience in the culinary industry and is suitable for individuals interested in developing their kitchen expertise.
Responsibilities
- Assist with food preparation and meal assembly according to specified recipes and standards
- Assist with the assistance or preparing, cooking and serving Apetito meals.
- Support the cooking process by preparing ingredients and basic dishes under supervision
- Maintain cleanliness of work surfaces, utensils, and kitchen equipment in compliance with food safety regulations
- Organise ingredients and supplies to ensure efficient workflow during service times
- Ensure all health and safety protocols are adhered to at all times
- Support stock management by checking inventory levels and notifying supervisors of shortages or expiry dates
- Assist with general cleaning duties within the kitchen area to uphold hygiene standards
Requirements
- Previous experience in catering or cooking is desirable but not essential; willingness to learn is key
- Basic knowledge of food safety standards and hygiene practices
- Experience with meal preparation, food presentation, and kitchen organisation preferred
- Good organisational skills with the ability to work efficiently under pressure
- Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Flexibility to adapt to varying shifts and duties as required
- A positive attitude towards learning new culinary skills and procedures
