Works Manager / Shop Floor Manager – Toolmaking

Evolution Recruit is proud to be working in partnership with a well-established and highly respected precision engineering and toolmaking business in Mansfield to recruit an experienced Works Manager / Shop Floor Manager.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Toolmaker, Shop Foreman, Works Manager, Toolroom Manager or Workshop Manager who has a strong practical understanding of toolmaking and enjoys organising work, managing priorities and keeping jobs moving through the factory.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring work is effectively planned, prioritised and progressed through the workshop, using their own practical toolmaking experience to understand realistic timescales, identify potential bottlenecks and ensure customer deadlines are achieved.
The Role
This is a hands-on shop floor management role, rather than a traditional production planning position.
You will be responsible for organising and progressing work through the factory, working closely with the CNC machining and bench assembly teams to ensure jobs are completed efficiently and on time.
Your previous experience within the toolmaking industry will be essential, allowing you to understand the practical requirements of each job, estimate realistic operation times and determine the best sequence in which work should be completed.
You will be the key person ensuring work continues to move through the workshop and that any potential delays are identified and addressed before they impact delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Organise and prioritise work across the factory floor.
- Monitor jobs from start to completion and ensure they continue to progress.
- Regularly progress chase jobs and ensure agreed completion dates are achieved.
- Coordinate workloads between CNC machining, EDM and bench / toolroom assembly.
- Use your practical toolmaking experience to assess realistic operation times and manufacturing requirements.
- Determine the most effective sequence for progressing individual jobs through the workshop.
- Identify potential bottlenecks, delays or resource issues and take appropriate action.
- Liaise closely with Toolmakers, CNC Machinists and other workshop personnel to keep work moving.
- Provide clear updates to management on job progress and anticipated completion dates.
- Ensure priorities are clearly communicated across the workshop.
- Support the team with practical problem solving and day-to-day manufacturing decisions.
- Help ensure work is completed to the required quality standards and customer deadlines.
- Maintain a safe, organised and efficient workshop environment.
- Assist with developing and improving internal production planning and tracking processes.
Candidate Requirements
We are looking for someone with genuine hands-on toolmaking experience who understands how a job moves through a precision engineering workshop.

- Works Manager
- Shop Foreman

- Senior Toolmaker
- Toolmaking Supervisor
- Experienced Toolmaker looking to take the next step
Essentially, we are looking for someone who can look at a job and understand:
What needs to be done, how long it should take, what needs to happen first, and how to get it completed on time.
Ideally, you will have experience of:
- Toolmaking / precision engineering.
- CNC Milling.
- EDM.
- Bench fitting and tool assembly.
- Managing and progressing multiple jobs through a workshop.
- Understanding manufacturing processes and realistic operation times.
- Organising workloads and prioritising urgent work.
- Supervising or coordinating workshop personnel.
Previous management or supervisory experience would be advantageous, but strong practical toolmaking experience and the ability to organise work effectively are the key requirements.
You will need to be a practical, organised and confident individual who is comfortable working directly with the shop floor and has the technical credibility to make informed decisions about how work should be progressed.
What We Are Looking For
This role would particularly suit someone who has progressed from a hands-on Toolmaking background into a supervisory or management position, or an experienced Toolmaker who is ready to take the next step in their career.
The company can develop and train the successful candidate on its own production planning systems and processes, so extensive production planning experience is not essential.
What is important is that you understand toolmaking from a practical perspective and can effectively organise and progress work through the factory.
Working Hours
- Monday & Wednesday: 7:30am – 4:30pm
- Tuesday & Thursday: 7:30am – 4:00pm
- Friday: 7:30am – 12:30pm
Flexibility is required to meet operational and business needs.
Salary & Benefits
- £45,000 – £55,000 per annum, depending on experience.
