Grounds Maintenance Operative
Location: DL1 4QB (Based at West Cemetery, Carmel Road North, Darlington, DL3 8RY)
Contract: Temporary – 1 Month+
Hours: 37 Hours per Week, Monday to Friday
Rate: £13.47 per hour
About the Role
We are recruiting for a Grounds Maintenance Operative to join a busy team responsible for maintaining parks, open spaces, cemeteries and other public areas to a high standard.
This is a physically active, outdoor role suited to someone with previous grounds maintenance, gardening or landscaping experience. You'll help ensure public spaces remain clean, safe and well-presented while delivering excellent service to the local community.
What You'll Be Doing
- Carry out grass cutting, mowing and strimming
- Maintain flower beds, shrubs, hedges and landscaped areas
- Plant, weed and prune as required throughout the season
- Assist with cemetery grounds maintenance and presentation
- Operate grounds maintenance equipment and machinery safely
- Sweep paths, clear leaves and remove litter from public spaces
- Carry out general horticultural and landscaping duties
- Complete routine inspections and report any defects or hazards
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with Health & Safety procedures
- Work as part of a team to maintain high standards across multiple sites
What We're Looking For
Essential
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance, gardening, landscaping or horticulture
- Experience using equipment such as mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters and leaf blowers
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Good understanding of Health & Safety procedures
- Physically fit and able to undertake manual work
- Reliable with a strong work ethic
- Good communication and teamwork skills
Desirable
- PA1/PA6 Pesticide Certificate
- Horticultural qualification
- Experience working within parks, cemeteries or local authority grounds maintenance
- Full UK Driving Licence
