SEND Tutor / Learning Mentor Alternative Provision | Full-Time | 40 Hours Per Week Leadership Opportunity | Small Group Teaching | Career Progression Available
Covered Services is recruiting on behalf of an Alternative Provision seeking an exceptional SEND Tutor to lead the delivery of education for vulnerable young people.
This is not a Teaching Assistant role. We are looking for someone confident in leading learning, delivering lessons and taking responsibility for the progress of a small cohort of learners.
You will work with groups of approximately 4-5 students, primarily at Key Stage 3 with some Key Stage 4 learners, delivering English, Maths, PSHE and targeted interventions. You will be responsible for planning learning, tracking progress, monitoring attainment and supporting learners to achieve both academic and personal development goals.
Our learners often have SEND, SEMH needs, EHCPs, anxiety, trauma backgrounds, poor educational experiences or are at risk of exclusion. They require a tutor who can build positive relationships, maintain high expectations and create a learning environment where they can succeed.
The Role
As a SEND Tutor, you will:
- Lead the delivery of English, Maths and PSHE.
- Deliver high-quality interventions to close learning gaps.
- Support learners working below age-related expectations.
- Monitor and track learner progress against targets.
- Prepare learners for end-of-term assessments and testing.
- Support EHCP outcomes and individual learning plans.
- Deliver mentoring and wellbeing support.
- Build strong relationships with learners and families.
- Maintain accurate records and progress reports.
- Contribute to review meetings and annual reviews.
- Create a safe, engaging and structured learning environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Learning
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons to small groups.
- Adapt learning to meet individual SEND needs.
- Assess learners and identify areas for development.
- Support literacy, numeracy and personal development.
- Ensure learners make measurable progress.
Progress and Achievement
- Track learner progress and attainment.
- Record interventions and impact.
- Complete reports and assessments.
- Support preparation for end-of-term testing.
- Monitor attendance and engagement.
Pastoral and Wellbeing Support
- Act as a mentor and trusted adult.
- Support emotional regulation and wellbeing.
- Promote resilience, confidence and independence.
- Help learners overcome barriers to education.
Essential Requirements
- Minimum Grade 5 (or equivalent C+) in GCSE English.
- Minimum Grade 5 (or equivalent C+) in GCSE Maths.
- Experience working with SEND, SEMH or vulnerable learners.
- Confidence delivering English and Maths.
- Strong behaviour management and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently and lead learning sessions.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
Desirable
- Degree qualification.
- Teaching qualification or working towards one.
- Alternative Provision experience.
- Knowledge of EHCPs and SEND Code of Practice.
- ELSA, Thrive or trauma-informed training.
