About the role
We are a logistics company operating our own vehicle workshop in Wembley, maintaining and repairing a working fleet of commercial vehicles including small and large vans, LWB and SWB vehicles, Luton box vans and vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes.
We are looking for an experienced Commercial Vehicle Mechanic with strong petrol and diesel engine knowledge.
This is not a basic servicing or fast-fit position.
We need a proper hands-on mechanic who understands engines and mechanical systems in depth and can independently diagnose a fault, identify the cause and carry out the correct repair.
The successful candidate should be confident with major mechanical repairs, particularly engine-related work, as well as clutches, gearboxes, brakes, suspension and general commercial vehicle maintenance.
Key responsibilities
- Diagnose petrol and diesel engine faults
- Carry out engine repairs and major mechanical work
- Investigate faults and identify the root cause rather than simply replacing parts
- Work on timing belts and timing chains
- Diagnose cooling, lubrication and compression-related problems
- Diagnose and repair fuel and injection system faults
- Work on turbochargers, injectors, EGR and DPF-related systems
- Carry out cylinder-head and internal engine work where required
- Diagnose clutch and gearbox faults
- Remove and replace clutches, gearboxes and major mechanical components
- Inspect and repair braking, steering and suspension systems
- Carry out scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance
- Use workshop diagnostic equipment to assist with fault finding
- Inspect vehicles and identify developing faults before breakdowns occur
- Maintain accurate records of work completed
- Complete repairs safely and to a high standard
- Work independently while supporting the rest of the workshop team
What we are looking for
Strong practical mechanical ability is more important to us than certificates alone.
You should have:
- Substantial professional experience as a Vehicle Mechanic, Commercial Vehicle Mechanic or Vehicle Technician
- Strong knowledge of petrol and diesel engines
- Proven experience diagnosing mechanical and engine faults
- Experience carrying out significant engine repairs, not only routine servicing
- Ability to take a vehicle from initial diagnosis through to completed repair
- Experience with clutches and gearboxes
- Good knowledge of vans and light commercial vehicles
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving skills
- Confidence using workshop tools and equipment
- A full UK driving licence
- High standards of workmanship and safety
- Ability to work independently as part of a small workshop team
Desirable experience
- 5+ years of professional mechanical experience
- Commercial vehicle or fleet maintenance experience
- Experience working across different vehicle makes and models
- Engine rebuilding or major internal engine repair experience
- Turbocharger, injector, EGR and DPF diagnosis
- Electrical fault-finding knowledge
- NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, IMI or equivalent automotive qualification
- C1 or other commercial vehicle driving entitlement
Automotive qualifications are desirable, but practical ability and genuine mechanical experience are more important to us.
What we offer
- £32,000–£37,000 per year, depending on experience and ability
- Permanent, full-time employment
- Monday to Friday, 9:00am–6:00pm
- 20 days paid annual leave plus bank holidays
- Workshop tools provided
- Specialist tools and diagnostic equipment provided
- Training on the diagnostic equipment used in our workshop
- Additional hours may occasionally be offered depending on workload and availability
- Small workshop team of approximately 4–5 people
- Varied work across a commercial vehicle fleet
Important
We are not looking for someone whose experience is limited to oil changes, tyres, basic servicing or straightforward parts replacement.
We are looking for an experienced mechanic who understands how petrol and diesel engines work, can think through faults logically and is capable of completing substantial mechanical repairs independently.
You should be comfortable being given a vehicle with an unknown mechanical problem and working systematically to determine what has failed, why it has failed and how it should be repaired.
If this matches your experience, please apply with your CV. We are particularly interested in hearing about major engine repairs and difficult mechanical faults you have personally diagnosed and repaired.
Suitable candidates will be invited for an initial discussion followed by a practical technical assessment at our Wembley workshop.
Pay: £32,000.00-£37,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Casual dress
- Free parking
- On-site parking
Application question(s):
- Please briefly describe the most complex petrol or diesel engine fault you have personally diagnosed and repaired. Include the vehicle, symptoms, how you diagnosed the fault, what you found and the repair you carried out.
- Which major mechanical repairs have you personally completed? Please list any experience with engine removal/replacement, cylinder heads, timing belts/chains, internal engine repairs, injectors/turbos, clutches and gearboxes.
Experience:
- Vehicle mechanic: 3 years (preferred)
Work Location: In person
