Room Manager – Job Description
Responsible to: Deputy Nursery Manager / Nursery Manager
Responsible for: Practitioners, Apprentices and Students within the designated room
Key Role: Leading high-quality care, learning and practice within a nursery room
Job Purpose
The Room Manager is responsible for leading the day-to-day operation of their designated room, ensuring outstanding standards of care, learning and development for all children. They provide leadership, guidance and support to practitioners, role model best practice and create a positive, inclusive and nurturing environment where children, families and colleagues thrive.
As a key member of the nursery leadership team, the Room Manager ensures that room practice aligns with the nursery's values, policies, safeguarding responsibilities and quality expectations.
Main Areas of Responsibility:
Practice & Quality
Lead the delivery of high-quality EYFS teaching and learning within the room.
Ensure planning, observations and assessments support children's individual development.
Create a stimulating, safe and inclusive learning environment.
Monitor children's progress and support interventions where required.
Maintain high standards of hygiene, health and safety and room presentation.
Model outstanding practice and professionalism at all times.
Leadership & Team Management
Lead and mentor Practitioners, Apprentices and Students within the room.
Organise daily room routines, staffing deployment and activities.
Support team development through coaching, feedback and role modelling.
Contribute to staff supervisions and performance discussions where appropriate.
Support induction and onboarding of new team members.
Promote a positive and collaborative team culture.
Safeguarding & Welfare
Take responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children.
Ensure safeguarding policies and procedures are consistently followed.
Recognise, respond to and report safeguarding concerns appropriately.
Maintain accurate records relating to children's welfare and wellbeing.
Promote children's emotional wellbeing, independence and positive behaviour.
Parents & Communication
Build positive and professional relationships with parents and carers.
Share children's progress, achievements and developmental information confidently.
Support settling-in processes and transitions.
Respond professionally to parent queries or concerns, escalating where necessary.
Act as a positive ambassador for the nursery and Family Adventures Group.
Operational Responsibilities
Ensure compliance with nursery policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
Support occupancy and retention through excellent parent experiences.
Monitor room resources and equipment, reporting requirements as needed.
Contribute to nursery events, open days and parent engagement activities.
Support inspections, audits and quality improvement initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Essential
Experience working in an early years setting.
Strong knowledge of the EYFS framework.
Excellent understanding of safeguarding and child welfare.
Experience leading practice within an early years room.
Strong communication and organisational skills.
Ability to motivate and support colleagues.
Desirable
Previous Room Leader or supervisory experience.
Experience supporting apprentices, students or junior team members.
Understanding of quality improvement and inspection expectations.
