The Fresh Fish Shop is looking for an energetic, personable and reliable Saturday Seafood Shop Assistant to help create an outstanding experience in our busy Bermondsey shop.
Saturday is our busiest retail day. We need someone who enjoys speaking with customers, takes pride in presenting great food and understands that brilliant service is about more than simply putting products into a bag.
Working alongside our Lead Fishmonger & Shop Supervisor, you will help maintain a beautiful, well-stocked seafood counter, serve customers confidently and contribute to increasing sales and average customer spend.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in hospitality, food retail, markets, delis, fishmongers or customer service who would like to become part of a growing independent food business.
Your responsibilities
You will help with:
- Setting up and maintaining an attractive, abundant seafood counter.
- Welcoming customers and delivering warm, attentive service.
- Learning about our seafood and making helpful product recommendations.
- Suggesting complementary products and encouraging customers to try something new.
- Serving, weighing, packing, labelling and presenting products carefully.
- Replenishing the counter throughout the day.
- Preparing simple marinades, seafood kebabs and oven-ready products where required.
- Operating the till and handling customer payments accurately.
- Monitoring stock and communicating shortages to the shop supervisor.
- Keeping the shop, displays, equipment and customer areas exceptionally clean.
- Following all food-safety, allergen, traceability and hygiene procedures.
- Supporting the Lead Fishmonger during busy periods.
- Assisting with cleaning, closing and stock checks at the end of the day.
What we are looking for
You do not need to be a fully trained fishmonger, but you must be genuinely interested in food and willing to learn about seafood.
We are looking for someone who is:
- Friendly, confident and comfortable speaking with customers.
- Naturally helpful and able to make recommendations without being pushy.
- Energetic and able to remain positive during busy periods.
- Commercially aware and interested in helping increase sales.
- Reliable, punctual and available to work consistently every Saturday.
- Clean, organised and proud of maintaining high standards.
- Comfortable working with raw fish and seafood.
- Able to follow instructions and work well as part of a small team.
- Able to reach Bermondsey for a 7:00am start.
Previous experience in food retail, hospitality, a deli, butcher, fishmonger, restaurant or market environment would be highly beneficial.
Knife or food-preparation skills are desirable but not essential, as training can be provided. Attitude, reliability and customer-service ability are the most important qualities.
Hours
- Every Saturday, 7:00am–3:30pm.
- 30-minute unpaid break.
- 8 guaranteed paid hours each week.
- Additional Friday, wholesale, event and seasonal shifts may occasionally be available.
Applicants must be able to commit reliably to working Saturdays on an ongoing basis.
Pay and rewards

This is not a role for someone who wants to stand quietly behind a counter. We want someone who will engage with customers, learn the products, take pride in the shop and help us build one of London’s best independent seafood shopping experiences.
