About the role
We are looking for a bright, hardworking and ambitious person to join our payroll team in Leatherhead.
This is a trainee position with genuine career progression. You do not need to have previous payroll experience. We are more interested in finding someone with strong academic ability, an excellent work ethic, good attention to detail and a genuine desire to learn and develop.
You will initially work alongside our experienced payroll team, helping with the administrative and organisational work involved in managing payrolls for our clients.
As your knowledge and experience develop, we will train you in all aspects of payroll processing and gradually give you more responsibility.
Our aim is to develop you into an experienced Payroll Administrator capable of independently looking after your own portfolio of clients and managing their payroll requirements from start to finish.
What you will be doing
Initially, you will work closely with and support our experienced payroll team. Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting the payroll team with day-to-day payroll administration
- Entering and checking payroll information
- Processing starters, leavers and employee changes
- Checking information supplied by clients and ensuring records are complete and accurate
- Managing the submission of pension contribution data to pension providers
- Assisting with the administration of workplace pension schemes and Auto Enrolment requirements
- Managing our ongoing administrative relationship with The Pensions Regulator, including keeping records and required information up to date
- Maintaining our internal client and payroll data, ensuring information is accurate and kept up to date
- Preparing and managing client invoicing
- Helping the payroll team organise and manage their workflow, ensuring work is planned effectively and payroll deadlines are met
- Monitoring outstanding information and following up with clients where necessary
- Communicating with clients by email and telephone
- Supporting the team in meeting weekly and monthly payroll deadlines
As your knowledge and experience develop, you will progressively learn:
- How to process weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly and monthly payrolls from start to finish
- PAYE and National Insurance
- Statutory payments, including SSP and SMP
- Workplace pensions and Auto Enrolment
- RTI submissions to HMRC
- Year-end payroll procedures
- How to identify and resolve payroll queries
- How to communicate confidently and professionally with clients
- How to organise and manage your own workload and deadlines
Over time, you will be given increasing responsibility, with the ultimate aim of managing your own portfolio of payroll clients and taking responsibility for their payroll requirements from start to finish.
Who we are looking for
The most important thing to us is finding the right person.
We are looking for someone who is:
- Bright and quick to learn
- Hardworking and willing to put the effort in
- Ambitious and keen to develop
- Extremely accurate, with excellent attention to detail
- Confident and comfortable working with numbers
- Well organised and able to prioritise their workload
- Proactive – someone who notices what needs doing and takes responsibility for getting it done
- Comfortable using computers and learning new software
- A confident and professional communicator
- Reliable and able to take responsibility for their work
- Able to work calmly and accurately to deadlines
- Happy working as part of a team
- Keen to learn and take on increasing levels of responsibility
Payroll involves dealing with people's pay and working to strict deadlines. Accuracy, reliability and attention to detail are therefore essential.
We are looking for someone who takes pride in getting things right and who wants to become an important and dependable member of our team.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- A-levels (or equivalent) or a university degree
- GCSE Mathematics at Grade 6/B or above
- GCSE English Language at Grade 6/B or above
Previous payroll, accounts, finance or office experience would be an advantage, but it is not essential.
Full training will be provided.
Career progression
We want this to be the beginning of a career rather than simply an administrative job.
You will receive practical, hands-on training from an experienced payroll team. As your knowledge and confidence develop, you will be given increasing responsibility.
The progression we envisage is from supporting the payroll team with administration, through to processing payrolls yourself and ultimately managing your own portfolio of clients.
Salary progression will reflect your development, knowledge and ability to take responsibility for your own work and client portfolio.
For someone with the right ability, attitude and work ethic, there is significant scope to develop within the business.
Why join us?
This is an opportunity to learn a specialist profession while gaining practical experience from an established payroll team.
Rather than being limited to basic administrative work, you will gradually be taught the complete payroll process and given genuine responsibility as you develop.
You will gain experience in payroll processing, pensions, Auto Enrolment, client communication, invoicing, workflow management and the organisation of a busy payroll function.
For someone who is intelligent, hardworking and keen to progress, this is an opportunity to build a long-term career in payroll.
Pay: £25,000.00-£28,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
