Job Overview
We are managing a search for an award-winning, leading heavy engineering specialist. Operating one of the UK’s largest heavy precision machining facilities, they handle high-value, complex components weighing up to 70 tonnes.
Due to a strong order book across the Marine Defence, Renewable Energy, and Nuclear sectors, they are seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to join their expanding shop-floor team.
Key Responsibilities
● Machine Setup & Operation: Set up, edit programs, and operate heavy CNC machine tools (large Horizontal Borers, Vertical Turning Lathes, or large-bed Mills).
● Workholding & Rigging: Engineer robust setups on T-slot beds using toe clamps, angle plates, and custom fixtures.
● Drawing & Tolerance Inspection: Read complex engineering drawings and hold tight geometrical tolerances using micrometers, bore gauges, and portable metrology tools.
● Safety & Lifting: Safely sling, lift, and maneuver multi-tonne workpieces using overhead gantry cranes.
● Process Improvement: Collaborate with team leaders and programmers to optimise tool paths, cut times, and setup procedures.
Required Experience & Skills
● Qualifications: Time-served apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering / Machining (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, ONC, or equivalent).
● Machine Tool Background: Proven experience setting and operating CNC Horizontal Borers (HBMs), Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs), or large multi-axis machine tools.
● Control Systems: Practical experience with Fanuc, Heidenhain, Siemens, or Hartrol controls.
● Materials: Experience machining structural steels, stainless steel, duplex, or exotic nickel alloys (e.g., Inconel).
● Mindset: Low-volume / jobbing focus with a strong commitment to high precision, craftsmanship, and shop-floor safety.
