Buyer – Groundworks & Civil Engineering
Location: Lancashire (Office Based)
Salary: £38,000–£45,000 (depending on experience)
About Us
We are a growing civil engineering and groundworks contractor delivering projects throughout the UK. Our workload includes commercial, industrial, infrastructure and residential developments, working for a range of repeat clients and principal contractors.
Due to continued growth, we are looking to recruit a Buyer to join our commercial team.
The Role
This is a key position within the business, responsible for procuring materials and plant at competitive rates while ensuring projects receive the right materials, at the right time and at the right cost.
Working closely with our Directors, Project Managers and Accounts team, you will become the main point of contact for purchasing across the business.
Responsibilities
- Negotiate and maintain competitive trading agreements with national merchants including Jewson, Keyline, Travis Perkins, Huws Gray, John Davidson Pipes and similar suppliers.
- Source and negotiate the best rates for materials including aggregates, ready-mix concrete, asphalt, drainage products, reinforcement, timber and specialist construction materials.
- Negotiate competitive agreements with national plant and tool hire companies.
- Obtain quotations from suppliers and compare costs to achieve best value.
- Raise purchase orders from Project Manager requisitions using our procurement system.
- Place material and plant orders to meet project programmes.
- Liaise with suppliers to ensure deliveries arrive accurately and on time.
- Resolve invoice queries and supplier discrepancies with our Accounts team.
- Build and maintain strong supplier relationships.
- Monitor supplier performance and identify opportunities to reduce procurement costs.
About You
We're looking for someone who is organised, commercially aware and confident dealing with suppliers.
Ideally you will have:
- 2–5 years' experience in a buying or procurement role within civil engineering, groundworks or construction.
- Good knowledge of construction materials and suppliers.
- Experience obtaining quotations and negotiating prices.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
- A proactive attitude with strong attention to detail.
- The ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Experience with procurement or accounting software would be advantageous but is not essential.

Pay: £38,000.00-£45,000.00 per year
