Hilites Group is looking for an experienced and reliable Multi-Trade Operative / General Builder to join us on a comprehensive residential refurbishment project in Shepperton.
This is a hands-on, project-based role for up to three months, suited to someone with broad residential refurbishment experience who is comfortable working across multiple trades and alongside specialist contractors.
Rather than being allocated one specific trade package, you will work throughout the project, supporting the refurbishment from initial strip-out and preparation through to installation, making-good and final snagging.
Key Responsibilities
The role will include:
- General building and multi-trade refurbishment works
- Strip-out and preparation
- Carpentry, including timber grounds, boxing, trims, skirtings, architraves, doors and minor framing
- Plasterboard installation, patch repairs and general making-good
- Bathroom and WC preparation and installation support
- Kitchen preparation and installation support
- Floor preparation, thresholds and trims
- Filling, sanding, caulking and general decorating
- Minor external repairs and general building works
- Opening-up and making-good for plumbers, electricians and other specialist trades
- Assisting with materials, site preparation and maintaining clear working areas
- Completing snagging and defects
- Protecting completed works as the project progresses
- Providing regular progress updates and photographs
- Identifying potential problems or additional works before proceeding
- Working closely with the Hilites project team to keep the refurbishment moving efficiently
The operative will not be expected to undertake regulated or specialist work outside their qualifications, including Gas Safe, electrical certification or HETAS works.
What We're Looking For
We are particularly interested in someone who is genuinely multi-skilled rather than limited to a single trade.
You should have good practical experience across residential refurbishment and be confident moving between different tasks as the project progresses.
The successful person should be:
- Experienced in residential refurbishment
- Competent across several building trades
- Strong in general building and carpentry
- Comfortable with bathroom and kitchen preparation/support
- Capable of good-quality boarding and making-good
- Able to undertake basic decorating and finishing
- Able to read a scope of works and work from instructions
- Able to identify issues before they become costly problems
- Comfortable working alongside specialist trades
- Reliable and able to maintain agreed attendance
- Organised and able to plan materials/tools ahead
- Quality-focused with good attention to detail
- Professional when working within a client's property
Requirements
Applicants should ideally have:
- Their own appropriate hand and power tools
- Suitable PPE
- Public liability insurance
- UTR and ability to work under CIS
- Own transport
- Relevant trade qualifications/competency where applicable
- References or examples of previous refurbishment projects
Contract & Pay
This is a self-employed CIS project engagement capped at three months.
Project fee: £3,500 gross per month.
Where HMRC confirms the standard CIS deduction rate, 20% will be deducted from the applicable labour payment.
The role is intended to provide consistent involvement throughout the project rather than occasional ad-hoc attendance. The operative will work alongside our specialist electricians, plumbers, plasterers, tilers, kitchen/bathroom installers and other contractors as required.
Additional costs, materials or variations must be agreed with Hilites Group in advance.
Why We're Looking for a Multi-Trade Operative
We want someone who can become a key hands-on member of the project team.
There are inevitably gaps between specialist trades during a refurbishment. The purpose of this role is to have an experienced operative available to pick up the numerous building, preparation, carpentry, making-good and finishing tasks required to keep the programme progressing.
For the right person, this project may also provide an opportunity to develop an ongoing working relationship with Hilites Group across future refurbishment, maintenance and property projects.
