ABOUT THE PROJECT
Pedal Power Carmarthenshire is a new, youth-led project funded by BBC Children in Need, running from 2026 to 2029. It supports young people aged 14–18 who are living in poverty and are at the margins of education, employment or training.
Each year, 30 young people complete accredited, hands-on training in bike repair, safety and maintenance, turning donated bikes into valuable community resources. Every participant keeps a bike they have refurbished themselves, removing a transport barrier and opening up new opportunities; surplus bikes go into our community Bike Library.
Delivery is shaped by a youth-led steering group, whose members co-deliver the project by organising community “fix it” events and group bike rides. Alongside the practical training, young people receive youth work support, one-to-one mentoring and a personalised “next steps” plan, so that the project leads somewhere — into volunteering, further training, or work.
The project is based at the Lord Arthur Rank Centre and works in partnership with schools, Pupil Referral Units, home education networks, asylum seeker services, care agencies and community groups.
JOB PURPOSE
To plan, deliver and develop engaging youth work activities that support the personal, social and educational development of young people on the Pedal Power project. The Youth Worker will create safe, inclusive and welcoming environments in which young people can build confidence, develop new skills, improve their wellbeing and achieve positive outcomes.
DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Delivering the project
- Plan, organise and deliver high-quality youth work sessions and activities for 30 young people per year.
- Work alongside the specialist trainer to deliver accredited, hands-on bike repair, safety and maintenance training.
- Support young people to plan and run community “fix it” events and group bike rides.
- Ensure every participant completes and keeps a refurbished bike, and that surplus bikes are added to the Bike Library.
- Ensure all activities comply with health and safety requirements and that the workshop is a safe working environment.
Supporting young people
- Build positive, professional relationships with young people aged 14–18.
- Encourage participation in activities that promote teamwork, communication, problem-solving and goal setting.
- Support young people to identify their strengths, interests and aspirations.
- Deliver one-to-one sessions to review progress and address barriers such as anxiety, family pressures or money worries.
- Connect young people with other support services, including Foothold Cymru’s wider anti-poverty provision.
- Agree a personalised “next steps” plan with each young person towards the end of the academic year, supporting them to continue volunteering or move into training, education or employment.
Youth voice and inclusion
- Support the youth-led steering group to shape, co-design and co-deliver the project, in line with our co-production toolkit.
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the work.
- Work with referral partners and community groups to reach young people who are least likely to access existing provision.
Safeguarding, monitoring and reporting
- Recognise safeguarding concerns and respond in line with organisational policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records, registers and notes as required by the project funder.
- Monitor attendance and evaluate the impact of activities.
- Contribute to funding reports through operational reporting, case studies and social media content.
General
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post, as reasonably requested.
PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential
- JNC-recognised Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Youth Work
- GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths
- Experience of working with children and young people
- Experience of planning and delivering youth work activities
- Awareness of the issues affecting young people, including mental health, wellbeing, education and social exclusion
- Experience of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Good ICT skills, including basic ability with software such as Canva
- Ability to work flexibly and as part of a team
- Availability to work outside office hours, including after school and at weekends
Desirable
- First aid and safeguarding training (training will be provided if not already held)
- Interest in cycling or bike maintenance — no formal qualification required, as technical training is delivered by a specialist trainer
- Experience of supporting young people through accredited or vocational learning
- Experience of co-production or youth-led working
- Welsh language skills

- The post is funded by BBC Children in Need and is fixed term until 31 August 2029.
- The role requires regular evening, after-school and weekend working; hours are worked flexibly by agreement with our Operations Manager.
