Home to School Passenger Assistant – SEND
Location: WN1 1NJ / Wigan Borough
Pay Rate: £13.90 per hour
Contract: Temporary
Hours: Split Shift – approximately 7:30am–10:00am and 2:30pm–4:00pm
We are recruiting for Home to School Passenger Assistants to support children and young people with a range of Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) as they travel to schools and colleges both within and outside the borough.
This is a rewarding role within a statutory school transport service, where you will play an important part in ensuring the safety, comfort and wellbeing of passengers during their journeys.
Your support will help children and young people arrive at school or college calm, settled and ready to learn.
The Role
As a Home to School Passenger Assistant, you will:
- Accompany children and young people with SEND during their journeys to and from school or college.
- Ensure passengers are safe, comfortable and supported throughout the journey.
- Provide a calm, reassuring and professional presence.
- Support children and young people with different needs and abilities.
- Work closely with drivers, families, schools and transport teams.
- Follow all relevant safeguarding, health and safety and passenger welfare procedures.
- Help ensure journeys run smoothly and passengers arrive safely and on time.
Working Hours
The role operates during school term time and is split into morning and afternoon journeys:
- Morning: approximately 7:30am – 10:00am
- Afternoon: approximately 2:30pm – 4:00pm
Exact hours may vary depending on the allocated route.
Transport Arrangements
The transport arranged for children will normally pick you up from your home or a pre-arranged pick-up point within the Wigan Borough boundary.
Where a suitable route is close to you, you may be expected to travel to an agreed pick-up point.
If you are required to drive your own vehicle as part of the role, mileage will be paid.
If you do not drive and are allocated a route further away, appropriate transport arrangements can be discussed.

- Previous experience working with children, young people or people with SEND is desirable but not specified as essential.
